When news broke late last month that Cleo magazine would be closing down shop after 44 years, rumours swirled about who would grace the cover of the last ever issue.

And with the edition due out on Monday, it's finally been revealed that Australian model Jesinta Campbell has been awarded the honour of their final cover star.

In a nod to the first issue of the magazine ever printed, in 1972, the 24-year-old Former Miss Universe Australia has emulated the cover to perfection, wearing a brunette wig and and a Marilyn Monroe-inspired white, halter-neck dress, strikingly similar to that of the golden-haired model who featured on the cover all those years ago.

"Final Issue - We farewell 44 years of sass, bachelors, sex and centrefolds," the caption on the front of the special collector's edition says.

Cleo's editorial staff merged with Dolly's in November 2013 and circulation numbers had dropped to 42,212, down from about 150,000 just eight years prior.

The magazine's founding editor Ita Buttrose told News Corp the news felt like a 'death in the family'.

"The writing was on the wall once I knew they were going to start stripping stories from other publications rather than commissioning stories here in Australia," she said.

"It’s sad; it’s like a death in the family for me, but it hadn’t been the mag the Cleo team created all those years ago for some time now."

Meanwhile Jesinta Campbell has been rubbing shoulders with some of Hollywood's finest recently, as she is in New York representing David Jones at Fashion Week.

She recently posted a snap of a New York street to her Instagram page, alongside the caption: "The chill is real."
