Karl Lagerfeld, the head designer and creative director at Chanel, recently spent a day in the Paris office of Metro and spoke candidly on a range of topics.

Speaking about the current crop of popular female singers, Lagerfeld said he preferred Adele to up-and-coming Lana del Rey, but said the British singing sensation was 'beautiful' but ‘a little bit too fat’ – a bit rich coming from a man who lost 42kg in 2001.

He is a fan of Adele’s singing voice however, calling it ‘divine’.

While Lagerfeld has been openly critical of curvy women in the past, two years ago the fickle fashion tour-de-force photographed a plus-size burlesque star, Miss Dirty Martini, for V Magazine. Lagerfeld also booked plus-size poster girl Beth Ditto to headline his Fendi party in 2009.

Lagerfeld also told Metro he was a big fan of Barack Obama, but he particularly admired the president’s wife.

‘My favourite thing about Mrs Obama was when she was asked if her skirt was not too tight and she answered "Why you don't like my big black ass?"’ he told Metro.

Lagerfeld, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1933, is no stranger to controversy.

In 2009 he claimed German model Heidi Klum, who has had extensive success as a Victoria’s Secret model, was unsuitable on the catwalk because she was “simply too heavy and has too big a bust”.

In 1993 Vogue editor Anna Wintour walked out of one of the designer’s Fendi catwalk shows at Milan Fashion Week after he hired strippers and an adult film star as models.
