Ever run out of your star item minutes into the bake sale? Don’t beat yourself up. At least you aren’t an international food brand. After two successful previews on National Cookie Days 2022 and 2023, Subway debuted its Footlong Cookie on January 22. Two weeks later, the sandwich chain pulled the plug on the XXL dessert.

What happened? According to CNN, demand was so great for the giant chocolate-chip treat that Subway couldn’t keep up. Though its fellow members of the Sidekicks menu, the Cinnabon Footlong Churro and Auntie Anne’s Footlong Pretzel, continued to be available, the Footlong Cookie lay dormant for four months. It's worth noting, the brand sold more than 5 million Footlong Cookies before returning to the drawing board according to a press release from Subway.

Lucky for us, it's back on menus now. Paul Fabre, Subway’s senior vice president of culinary and innovation, said in a statement, “Subway worked diligently to rush additional Footlong Cookie supply to satisfy cookie cravings at a great value and serve up a footlong dose of happiness this summer."

Exactly what that entailed will likely remain a mystery, but the good news is that customers’ desires for gooey, paddle-shaped cookies will no longer go unmet.

Meanwhile, to make up for lost cookies, Subway’s Sidekicks were joined by several other new additions this year. Those include bottled sauces at grocery stores in March and signature wraps in sub shops in April.

The Subway press release also teases “even more crave-worthy news coming this summer.” Something better than a melty, 12-inch chocolate chip cookie? We await this summer-making announcement.
