The Easy Way to Make Onion Dip 10x Better
I love onions, so naturally, French onion dip is one of my top snacks. It’s creamy, savory and pairs perfectly with chips or fresh veggies. But honestly? It looks like a lot of work to make from scratch, so I’ve always just grabbed the store-bought version or a box of Lipton soup mix and some sour cream—easy, tasty and no effort required.
Lately, though, I’ve been wondering...is homemade onion dip better? I keep seeing recipes where you slowly caramelize onions until they’re rich and golden, then mix them into a creamy, tangy base. It sounds incredible, and if I’m already a French onion dip fan, why not try making my own?
Maybe it’s time to put store-bought to the test and see if homemade is really worth the effort. Sadly, I don't always have time to make longer recipes. That's why this shortcut homemade onion dip shared by content creator Joanne Gallagher (@inspiredtaste) got my attention. It looks so delicious but won't take you all day to make.

The Creamy Onion Dip That Gets Rave Reviews
Joanne said this dip is "super creamy and incredibly delicious."
"It’s way tastier than anything store-bought, and I always get rave reviews. Trust me, it’s the only onion dip recipe you’ll ever need," she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.
You can grab the full recipe on her Instagram page, but you'll need a sweet onion, like Walla Walla or Vidalia, melted salted butter, fine sea salt, fresh ground black pepper and sour cream.
To make this, you roast the finely chopped onion in the oven with melted butter. That's so much easier than caramelizing them in a skillet but also will add so much great flavor to your dip.
When the onions are lightly golden and smell sweet, mix them into the sour cream and season with the salt and pepper. Joanne admits that this seems too easy, but it's a flavorful dip that gets a deeper flavor the more it sits in the fridge.

People who have made this dip had a lot of great things to say about it.
"Our favorite! So many compliments on this dip!" someone commented on Joanne's Instagram post.
"My absolute favorite dip EVER 😋. I make this all the time and friends and family love it and request it quite often," another person said.
"This is the only onion dip for me now," another person added. It looks incredible!

"Made this for a party and it was devoured! Delicious!" another commenter added. We can't wait to whip this up for a Super Bowl party.
A lot of people said it was so easy and that's why they were surprised at how good it tastes. A few people also said they subbed in Greek yogurt for the sour cream, which was just as good but a little healthier.
This is a great make-ahead recipe, too, so you can make it the night before an event and have it ready when your guests arrive—or when you need a quick late-night snack.
