The actress explained that her pup pal is in good hands because he goes to the same vet as Robert De Niro's pets.

Drew Barrymore’s adorable dog Douglas has been diagnosed with Lyme disease.

The 14-year-old rescue pup’s health condition was brought up by guest Carol Kane during Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. “I hear Douglas is at the vet today,” the actress said at the beginning of their interview. “I’m sorry to bring it up.”

“Oh my god, he is,” Barrymore groaned. “He got Lyme’s disease from a tick.”

According to PetMD, Lyme disease is a serious condition that occurs when a dog is bitten by an infected tick, causing them to experience a range of symptoms that include joint inflammation, lethargy, fever, and kidney failure. While emergency medical treatment is needed, the condition can be cured if detected early with antibiotics.

Kane — who, like Barrymore, is a vocal advocate for rescuing dogs — immediately offered her help to ensure that Douglas was properly looked after by only the very best. “I told your staff that I have a genius, genius vet in case you want a second opinion and gave them the info,” she said. “Because I’m in love with Douglas and I almost had to walk off the show because he wasn’t here. But then I love you too, so I relented.”

Barrymore noted that she was “relieved” Kane chose to stay with her despite her canine costar being unable to join them. “I’m so mad that he’s not here,” she added, to which Carol replied, “He’s such a good boy.”

But have no fear — the Charlie’s Angels actress explained that Douglas is in very good hands at his vet. “I found out about my vet because someone said that Robert De Niro goes to him,” she said. “And when I heard Robert De Niro goes to this vet, I thought, 'No one’s messing with Robert De Niro. And I want to go to that vet.'”

At the end of the interview, Kane asked Barrymore to keep her in the loop about Douglas’ health and offered her vet once again. “Douglas is gonna be fine, because he has to be fine,” Barrymore replied, assuaging Kane's concerns. “If it’s not Robert De Niro’s vet, I’m calling you for your vet.”

Kane jokingly added, “And tell Robert De Niro that I don’t need his vet, but I need him. Is that OK?”

Douglas has been a member of the Drew Crew since long before The Drew Barrymore Show began in 2020. The popular pooch, who starred alongside Barrymore in a Ring commercial last year, can frequently be spotted accompanying his mom on set, often sitting beside her or sleeping during celebrity interviews.
