Disney+ Unveils Cast For Jean Charles De Menezes Drama Series

Disney+ has unveiled an all-star cast for its series about Jean Charles de Menezes, who was tragically mistaken for a terrorist after the London 7/7 bombings by police and shot dead.

Set to premiere in the spring, Jeff Pope’s series Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes has cast a newcomer in the role of de Menezes, Edison Alcaide, who will be joined by Conleth Hill, Russell Tovey, Max Beesley, Emily Mortimer, Daniel Mays, Laura Aikman and The Crown star Alex Jennings.

Mortimer will play Cressida Dick, who went on to become the chief of the Metropolitan Police, while Hill is Sir Ian Blair, who was police chief at the time of de Menezes’ death.

The series comes 20 years after 7/7 and a wealth of documentaries about the attack that shook Britain are also airing or have already aired, including Channel 4’s Shoot to Kill: Terror on the Tube about de Menezes. De Menezes’ death happened around two weeks after 7/7 following a second set of planned attacks, which failed but set off a manhunt. The Brazilian electrician was mistakenly shot by police at a London underground station, leading to protests, introspection over shoot-to-kill policies and fierce criticism of the Metropolitan Police. De Menezes’ parents and other relatives are serving as consultants for the series.

Pope said: “This is an incredibly important story to tell, and we’ve got a heavyweight ensemble cast in place that will help us examine the events that led to the tragic shooting of the innocent Jean Charles de Menezes. He was just a commuter who was tracked for nearly an hour with surveillance failing to correctly identify him, before he was shot dead on a crowded tube train, leaving his family to try and shine a light on the critical errors that led to this devastating tragedy.”

Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes is written by Pope, produced by Kwadjo Dajan and directed by Paul Andrew Williams. Pope, Dajan and Williams also serve as executive producers. The series is executive produced for Disney+ by Lee Mason, Executive Director of Scripted.

Pope is a factual drama aficionado, having previously made Jimmy Savile series The Reckoning and See No Evil: The Moors Murders.
