Dexter: Original Sin’s Christina Milian Talks Maria LaGuerta’s Icy Reception at Miami Metro — Watch
Det. Maria LaGuerta has entered the chat.
In Episode 3 of Dexter: Original Sin, the ambitious future captain formerly portrayed by Lauren Velez takes her very first steps into the halls of Miami Metro PD. While fans might be celebrating yet another franchise favorite’s return, Captain Spencer feels otherwise. Seconds after she enters, he reads a quote she gave the Miami Herald where she clocks the amount of homicide cases that have “slipped through the cracks.” Spencer says Maria’s been sent by the commissioner to “clean things up,” and needless to say, he’s not happy to have her sticking around. As Batista tells Dexter: “She took it outside of the family.” Big no-no.

According to Christina Milian, the pop star/actress who’s now stepping into Maria’s heels, the character “makes her presence felt” from the moment she arrives on the scene.
“Maria LaGuerta’s purpose is to be purposeful,” Milian tells TVLine in the video above. “As the newbie in Miami Metro, it’s a tough point for her. It’s the ’90s. You understand what the positioning was for her. She has to prove herself, and it’s not only proving herself to everybody else, but she really wants to figure out what’s going on. She wants to solve the crimes. At the end of the day, that’s what her focus is. She plays no games.”
From the jump, she’s eager to get started and make a difference. While Spencer stonewalls her, Sgt. Harry Morgan takes more of an interest in LaGuerta’s background. When he tries to offer her a piece of advice, she counters. “The cases on the top of that board all have one thing in common. The victims are white,” she says. “If a Black boy was kidnapped in Little Haiti, do you think they would hold a press conference on the courthouse steps?”
In just one episode’s time, LaGuerta finds a witness for one of the department’s open cases, leading Harry to commend her solid police work. But Dexter’s going to have to be slick if he wants to avoid detection by Miami Metro’s freshest of talents.
