Dessert Masters, aka the sweetest show on reality TV, returned for its highly-anticipated second season on Monday night with 10 of Australia’s best pastry chefs competing for the culinary crown and $100,000. The popular MasterChef Australia spin-off features Melissa Leong on the judging panel alongside international pastry chef and chocolatier, Amaury Guichon.

The cooking competition kicked off with a bang in the premiere episode as the contestants were tasked with preparing “a jaw-dropping, show-stopping, chart-topping dessert”. Former MasterChef winner Emelia Jackson, who recently told Yahoo Lifestyle she found the series “really, really challenging”, served a selection of three different eclairs.

Two-time MasterChef contestant Reece Hignell also wowed the judges with his iconic dessert trolley featuring his Nan’s sponge, orange Basque cheesecake, lemon tart and a 17-layer chocolate hazelnut cake, while Darren Purchese plated a peach melba comprised of 15 elements.

However, it was pastry chef John Demetrios who won the first challenge of the season with his dish named ‘Nuts About Coconut’. The dessert was made up of a coconut frangipane and coconut mousse double-layered doughnut filled with caramel and topped with coconut sorbet, lime tulle and white chocolate feathers.

“Flawless. I love it,” Amaury remarked after tasting the dish. “The flavours are stunning, all the textures complement each other. Every element is interesting.

“The true meaning of ‘Dessert Masters’ is the mastering of the craft, and this is a mastered plate. I’m very excited to see more and more of you.”

Viewers took to social media following the episode to share their excitement over the new season, although they admitted it was hard not being able to taste the dishes themselves.

“Far out these desserts are all spectacular,” a third commented, followed by someone else who wrote, “Those were some brilliant dishes! Can't wait for the rest of the season”.

Others also said that they were thrilled to see Melissa back on their screens after she left her role on MasterChef last year, and they were excited to see what else the contestants create.

“What a breath of fresh air. Missed Mel and am happy to see Emelia again. Bring on the over-the-top desserts!” a fan shared.
