DC Chiefs On Exit Of Warner Bros Marketing Boss & How David Zaslav Has “Rallied The Whole Company Behind ‘Superman'”

At the DC Studios press conference Friday, the division’s co-chiefs Peter Safran and James Gunn were asked to comment on the axing of Warner Bros Global Marketing czar Josh Goldstine and how that might impact affairs moving forward.

Weeks after Warner Bros launched the studio’s most viewed trailer of all time with Gunn’s Superman to 250 million views, Goldstine was shockingly shown the door.

At the same time, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav has a Superman promotional blitzkrieg in the works, one similar to what the studio executed with Barbie across various silos of the conglomerate including plugs on Food Network and HGTV. Those efforts with Barbie yielded the studio’s highest-grossing movie of all time with $1.44 billion worldwide.

Said Safran, “Well, I would say that it was a decision that Mike and Pam felt was the best. But for us, we work incredibly close with [new marketing heads] Christian [Davin], Dana [Nussbaum] and John Stanford who are all incredibly talented. We’ve been through the mill enough times making these big movies, and distributing and marketing these movies, that we feel that we’re on top of every element of it, truly every element.”

Added Gunn, “John is the one who basically cut the trailer, but it was with me being incredibly involved in the trailer, and that’s just the way it’s going to continue to be with me being involved with the creative, and Peter being involved with the overall structure of everything.”

Said Safran: “We’re leaving no stone unturned when it comes to ensuring that audiences know about and experience our film. We feel good. If there’s a moment that we don’t feel good, we’ll do something about it in a tangible fashion.”

The Conjuring franchise producer emphasized, “We have the full support of DZ [Zaslav] on all fronts — he loves what we’re doing, loves the movie, and has really rallied the whole company behind Superman for this summer. You’ve all seen what can happen when Warner Bros Discovery gets behind a Barbie, a Beetlejuice, a Wonka or Kong, and that’s the way it’s being treated right now.”

He further noted, “Everything that DZ promised us two years when we took the job, it’s been a reality since we’ve been in the job.”

Superman opens July 11. It won’t be shocking if it posts the best opening of 2025 domestic box office year. Last year, Deadpool & Wolverine opened to $211.4M.
