A cult Australian fast-food chain is hoping to kick off a fiesta this weekend as it plans to redecorate in honour of Cinco de Mayo.

Guzman y Gomez revealed this week it’s restaurants would be refreshed with “vibrant colours and feathers” to celebrate the regional Mexican yearly holiday.

Cinco de Mayo — translated literally as May 5 — celebrates Mexico’s underdog victory against an invading French Empire army at an 1862 battle in Puebla.

The date, while not celebrated officially in the North American country, has become an symbol of Mexican spirit in Puebla and the United States.

On Tuesday, Guzman y Gomez announced its plans to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by “honouring” a folk dance unique to Puebla in artwork and festively decorated restaurants.

“The dance is called Danza de los Quetzales and is symbolic of the Quetzal bird, you’ll see the vibrant colours and feathers inspired by the dance at your local GYG,” the store said.
