There’s a certain sense of “expected” about Angelina Jolie’s outfits. The actress knows what she likes, and she’s made her signature style out of hero pieces that feel relevant now—and 10 years from now. Timeless is her sartorial M.O., so most of the time, when I see Jolie step out, my thoughts are something like, “That seems right for her.” But, I was recently caught so off-guard, not because something was as unexpected for her, but rather for the occasion.

Jolie recently attended the 42nd Torino Film Festival in Turin, Italy (take me back!), wearing her usual suspects: a black pencil skirt that hit mid-calf and a V-neck, slightly oversized sweater that she tucked in and wore slightly off the shoulder (note to self: wear my V-neck knits à la Jolie). The finishing touches? A warm wool jacket that so perfectly resembled her go-to trenches, but alas, even Jolie isn't immune to changing weather, and thus, slightly changing fashion. She rounded it all out with sleek black ballet flats. Wait, what?

5 Holiday-Ready Ballet Flats

Jolie is no stranger to flats, but most of the time, she's opted for sensible footwear while out and about running errands—a.k.a., in a casual way. That’s why seeing her in flats on the red carpet was a shock; I’m so used to stars going all out with their looks, especially with their footwear, typically opting for heels, but Jolie just single-handedly convinced me that, well, heck with expectation. Wear flats instead of heels with your gown! Opt for the low-to-the-ground shoe with your fanciest attire. Which also got me thinking: With holiday parties on the docket, and outfit planning underway, I’m going to take a different approach and wear all my dresses, skirts, and more with… flats.

Of course, considering it’s cold and exposed legs aren't ideal, I’ll be throwing in sheer tights, too, which luckily look so good paired with the footwear style. Not to mention, I’ll be able to comfortably stand and snack all night long; I won’t have to cut the evening short because of foot pain.

So, if the shoes are good enough for Jolie on the red carpet, they’re good enough for my faux red carpet. Shop some ballet flats inspired by the actress’s pair, below.
