Broadway star has leg amputated after coronavirus complications

Broadway star Nick Cordero is recovering in hospital after having his leg amputated due to complications with the coronavirus.

The 41-year-old actor, who has been nominated for a Tony award in the past, has been battling with COVID-19 for the past two weeks and while his wife, Amanda Kloots hasn’t been able to visit her husband in hospital, she’s been keeping his fans updated on his condition on her Instagram page.

While in hospital, Nick started to have clotting in his right leg, with blood unable to get down to his toes.

"They had him on blood thinners for the clotting, unfortunately the blood thinners were causing other issues," Amanda said on Saturday.

"The right leg will be amputated today."

Later in the day she updated her followers saying: "He made it through the surgery which is really big, because obviously his body's pretty weak.

"They're taking him back to the room to recover and rest, so hopefully he'll just kind of relax and rest."

The Waitress star, 41, is still on “medication to help his heart pump” as well as “still on the ventilator obviously to breathe,” Amanda noted.

Amanda said it had been an emotional and tiring day, but she thanked her support circle.

Just a few hours ago, Amanda, uploaded a video of the couple’s first dance at their wedding, writing: “Part of our wedding dance that our friends @swaywithmeny choreographed for us. I love dancing with you @nickcordero1 and we WILL dance again!”

People have been recording themselves dancing in videos shared with the hashtag #WakeUpNick. The cast of A Bronx Tale, which the Tony-nominated Cordero appeared in on Broadway, held a virtual prayer session.

And Kloots revealed that the cast of Rock of Ages — the show her husband had been appearing in while in L.A. — was babysitting the couple’s 10-month-old son, Elvis, so she could take a break to dance.

Kloots first shared on April 1 that her husband was sick. She said he had been “misdiagnosed” with pneumonia instead of COVID-19 and an initial coronavirus test came up negative.

She has not been able to visit him in the hospital.
