I read many different opinions online, and it seems that hot mustard holds the top spot in most rankings. Tips For Making Copycat McDonald's Sweet 'N Sour Sauce
Don't just dip. This sauce doesn't stop at being great for dipping. You can drizzle it over chicken, slather it on a chicken sandwich and I think it would make a great salad dressing, too.
Consider buying an immersion blender. If you don't have an immersion blender, you can use a food processor or standard blender to make this recipe. But you can find "stick" blenders for much less than back in the day, and I promise you will find lots of ways to use it!
Use the mustard you've got. Don't have Dijon on hand? Yellow mustard will work just fine.
Don't let it scorch. Be sure to whisk the mixture often while it cooks. There is so much sugar in the preserves that the sauce can scorch very easily.
Cornstarch is the key. Sometimes flour can be used as a swap for cornstarch as a thickener. That is NOT the case here. For the thick, smooth texture you want, cornstarch is the only way to go.
Make extra. If you make a lot of nuggets at your house, you might want to consider making a double batch. The sauce will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
