Billie Eilish sported an interesting new haircut—choppy, face-framing layers with long, flowing hair in the back, aptly named the "jellyfish haircut"—during her performance at the FireAid Benefit Concert for California Fire Relief on Thursday, Jan. 30. And my FYP went wild. Some people even thought (er, hoped) she was wearing a wig, preparing to reveal an even bigger change at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. She might have hidden it under a hat on the red carpet and during her performance, but oh, her jellyfish cut was certainly still there last night.

But things really started heating up when Miley Cyrus walked the red carpet with—you guessed it—also a jellyfish cut. Hmm... Interesting. Ope, another bites the dust: Lady Gaga's got a jellyfish cut now too. Could this weird-yet-kinda-chic look be the 2025 haircut trend?

For years, we've waffled between standard shag haircuts, wolf cuts, butterfly cuts, fox cuts, even going so far as the shullet (shag mullet—duh). But we're officially entering full mullet territory with this new 2025 hair trend in the jellyfish haircut, already cosigned by three mega-stars on the biggest night in music. Let's get into it.

What is the jellyfish haircut?

Well, it's kinda the best of both worlds, as Miley's alter-ego Hannah Montana would sing. It's both a bob and long hair. Sorta! The look is characterized by short, choppy layers around your face. With your hair pulled back, it might honestly look like a chin-length bob (see Billie's look below with her hair tucked into a hat on the carpet), or the head of a jellyfish. But the rest of your hair is left blunt and long, kinda like the tentacles. I know, I know, it's weird.

We see why it's a little controversial. It's bold! It's different! It takes some styling! But it's kinda cool, no? I mean, look at Lady Gaga. Her micro-bangs and jet-black hair feel like an ode to Gaga's Mayhem era, but the extra-sharp layers that frame her cheekbones seriously add a striking look. Meanwhile, Miley's bronde hair color has a soft, subdued look—so a combo of blunt bangs and face-framing chopped layers add some unexpected edge. Even better? Miley's look involves no extensions—it's purely her own hair, which is a feat considering how smooth and silky it looks (psst: She used a $16 hairspray that you can order yourself on Amazon).

Billie, however, opted for a set of curtain bangs to blend her front pieces, which definitely require much less maintenance and attention than a full-on bang. It's more imperfect and simplistic, with rougher edges and not as much precision—something that perfectly fits Billie's style, but also blends a bit better with her inky black hair versus a highlighted look á la Miley.

Will I be running to the salon asking for a jellyfish haircut? Eh, idk about that. But if three of the coolest people in music are doing it, well then clearly there's something to it...
