It follows “one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting the new pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the dead Pope’s wake, secrets which could shake the foundations of the Church,” according to the logline.

The movie has been a surprise hit in a time when many adult dramas do not pan out. It earned a total of 14 Oscar nominations, including best picture, director, actor for Fiennes, supporting actress for Rossellini, adapted screenplay, editing and original score.

“It’s been a tough road of late for adult-skewing films in the theatrical marketplace,” box office analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations told Variety. “So it’s a welcome sight to see a film like ‘Conclave’ break through the sequel and slasher noise and make its mark in movie theaters.”

Edward Berger, the Oscar-winning director behind “All Quiet on the Western Front,” helmed the movie from a screenplay by Peter Straughan.
