Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner are divorcing after four years of marriage.

The musician and the former Game of Thrones star tied the knot in 2019 after nearly three years of dating and have since had two children together, daughters Willa and Delphine.

Jonas first filed for divorce from Turner in early September 2023, in a filing that claimed "the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken." Shortly after, the pair released a joint statement on social media, noting that their divorce was “a united decision.”

However, things took a turn as Turner filed a lawsuit in a Manhattan court on Sept. 21, 2023, requesting that their two kids be returned to England. At the time, a source told PEOPLE that the divorce did not come as a "surprise" to the people around them.

"They were not separated but they've been living separate lives for months," the source said. "As far as custody goes, this literally all just happened, so they're figuring it out in real time. They did have a prenup. As a family, they were based in Florida. The kids were with him the last few months, traveling with him with family while he's been on tour. Following their joint statements, a source told PEOPLE that the couple was trying to “keep things as positive as possible” amid their divorce. "They're two incredibly scrutinized people. This is incredibly stressful for them, but everything between them has been very collaborative,” the source said.

The source also told PEOPLE that the previous sale of the former couple's home in Miami was "coordinated" by the couple together and "they made a profit on it."

"It was something they both wanted to do. Everything has been very collaborative. The sale of the house wasn't in advance of a divorce specifically as sometimes people do, but it does make it easier," they added.

After stepping out in New York with pal Taylor Swift (who previously dated Jonas back in 2008), Turner filed a lawsuit in a Manhattan court, requesting that her two kids be returned to England.

The complaint against Jonas called for "the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained," with Turner's legal team asserting the "wrongful retention" began on Sept. 20. Turner claimed that she and Jonas agreed to declare England their "forever home" in conversations that took place over Christmas 2022 as they prepped for the year ahead.

According to the documents, "The Father has possession of the children’s passports. He refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother."

Turner also alleged that the breakdown of their marriage happened "very suddenly" after an argument on Aug. 15, with Jonas filing for divorce on Sept. 5 and the Dark Phoenix actress learning about their split "through the media" days later.

The statement also addressed the issue of custody of their children. "Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting this past Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the kids. They have been with her since that meeting. Joe’s impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together towards an amicable co-parenting setup," Jonas' rep added in the statement.

According to documents filed on Sept. 25, in New York and obtained by PEOPLE, Turner and Jonas have temporarily agreed to keep their daughters in New York amid their ongoing divorce.

The interim consent order states that Turner and Jonas are ordered to keep their kids in the Southern and Eastern districts of New York, which includes New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

The filing also reveals that both Turner and Jonas have consented to this arrangement. "The parties have agreed to the entry of the attached proposed Interim Consent Order, without prejudice to either party's claims and defenses, prohibiting the removal of the parties' children from the jurisdictions of the United States District Courts for the Southern & Eastern Districts of New York pending further order of this Court," the documents say.

If the order is violated, the documents state that the court has the right to "take or cause to be taken measures under Federal or State law, as appropriate, to protect the well-being of the child involved or to prevent the child's further removal or concealment before the final disposition of the petition."

In court documents obtained by PEOPLE on Oct. 10, an interim consent order was laid out for custody of the estranged couple's two daughters — Delphine and Willa — for the coming weeks after being "engaged in a productive mediation from Oct. 4-7."

From Oct. 9-21, the children will be with the Game of Thrones alum during which time they are permitted to travel to England and throughout the United States.

Turner or the child's nanny is then to return the girls to the musician on the 21st, at which point the kids will remain with their dad until Nov. 2. The same travel permissions are extended to Jonas for his time with the children.

Jonas or the nanny then returns the children to Turner on Nov. 2, where they will stay until Nov. 22. The kids then return to Jonas from Nov. 22 to Dec. 16 and will seemingly spend the holidays with Turner, in her care from Dec. 16 to Jan. 7.

As for the future, the agreement requires "that the parties shall jointly submit a status report letter" prior to Dec. 23, outlining the status of mediation between the two at that point.

May 15, 2024: Sophie Turner breaks her silence on Joe Jonas divorce

During a candid interview with British Vogue, Turner opened up about her divorce from Jonas as well as her reaction to the media's portrayal of her as a mom. "I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn't leave. My kids were in the States and I couldn't get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out..." the mom of two told the outlet.

"It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother — mom guilt is so real!" Turner explained. "I just kept having to say to myself, 'None of this is true. You are a good mum and you've never been a partier.' "

Elsewhere in the interview, she also discussed how she hated the public perception of being one of the Jonas Brothers' "wives," referring to how she, Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas would often be called the J Sisters as they stepped out with the singers.

"There was a lot of attention on the three brothers, and the wives," she said. "Well, we were always called the wives, and I hated that."

"It was kind of this plus-one feeling," added Turner. "And that’s nothing to do with him – in no way did he make me feel that – it was just that the perception of us was as the groupies in the band."
