Cole Davies Wins the Final Scouting Moto Combine at Ironman Raceway
The 2024 MX Sports Pro Racing Scouting Moto Combine, presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare, wrapped up on August 23 at Ironman Raceway, serving as a prelude to the Pro Motocross Championship Finals. Twenty-five of the nation’s top amateur motocross prospects, including New Zealand’s Cole Davies of Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, showcased their skills in front of industry leaders and Rider Coaches like Chad Reed, Michael Byrne, and Kevin Windham.
Before the action kicked off, the riders participated in classroom sessions focused on training, nutrition, and media engagement, preparing them for the demands of professional racing.
In the first moto, Australia’s Kayden Minear (KTM Orange Brigade) led a trio of KTM riders out front, quickly establishing himself as the rider to beat this moto. While Minear pulled away, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing's Cole Davies was buried in 15th after a rough start. Despite the setback, Davies mounted an incredible charge through the field, making 11 passes to move into fourth. Meanwhile, Krystian Janik (Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green) battled his teammate Caden Dudney for second, with Dudney ultimately winning the duel. However, Davies wasn’t done yet; he passed Janik for third and capitalized on a late-race crash by Dudney to secure second place. Minear cruised to an uncontested victory, with Davies and Janik completing the podium.
The second moto saw Landen Gordon (Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green) grab the holeshot, with Davies and Dudney close behind. An early crash took Dudney out of contention, allowing NSA Factory Yamaha’s Avery Long to slot into third while Minear settled into fourth. As the race progressed, Davies began to pressure Gordon for the lead, and after a series of intense laps, he made the pass stick. Long followed suit to move into second, setting up a Yamaha duel for the win. Davies and Long traded fast laps, but Davies managed to hold off the challenge to secure the moto win by half a second. Gordon held on for third, while Minear finished fourth after an earlier mistake.
With a 2-1 finish, Cole Davies claimed the overall victory, further solidifying his status as a rising star after his Supercross Futures AMA National Championship win earlier this year. Minear’s 1-4 scores earned him second overall, and Gordon’s consistent 4-3 finishes were enough for third. Kevin Windham, coaching Davies, also took home the Combine Coaches Cup in his first role as a mentor in the program.
