The Clever Salt Trick We Wish We’d Known About Sooner

Keeping a kitchen clean can be frustrating because it's a hard-working space that's constantly getting messy. Grease buildup on surfaces and frequent spills add to the workload of keeping it clean. Countertops and sinks require daily attention to keep them sanitary, and clutter from utensils, pots, dishes and all those groceries can make a kitchen feel disorganized. One of the more frustrating things, though, is that kitchens often have mysterious smells and stains that seem to appear from nowhere and refuse to leave.

You may find yourself reaching for bleach and harsh chemicals to clean these stains and smells, but one of the best cleaners is all-natural: salt. Content creator @lynsey_queenofclean shared how she uses salt to keep her kitchen clean and one of these tips really stood out. It's genius!

How to Clean Your Kitchen with Salt

Salt is ideal for scrubbing and removing stains because its abrasive texture helps you scour pots, pans and cutting boards without scratching delicate surfaces. Salt can also absorb grease and spills, and it can eliminate odors in sinks and garbage disposals when combined with other natural cleaning agents, like lemon and vinegar. Salt also has antibacterial properties, making it an eco-friendly option for cleaning.

Lynsey says she uses salt for unclogging drains, refreshing sponges and keeping cut flowers alive for longer, but the hack that I really needed to see was that she uses salt to deodorize her cutting boards.

I use wooden cutting boards and I'm always looking for all-natural ways to keep them clean and fresh. In her Instagram video, Lynsey sprinkles salt directly on her cutting board and uses a damp sponge to scrub it all over the board. Then, she just rinses it away. Who knew that the secret to ridding yourself of bad smells was right in your pantry?

In the comments, people added some more uses for salt.

"Soaking fabric that’s got dried blood on it in cold salty water overnight. It literally comes out in the wash the next day. AMAZING!" someone said. That is definitely a good tip to have in your back pocket!

"Warm salt water gargle to relieve a sore throat," another person added. That is a good one!

"I discovered this year that it's fabulous for killing weeds!" another person said. We will have to try that one for sure!

Salt has so many wonderful uses and we're happy to put them all to the test.
