The Clever Olive Oil Trick We Wish We’d Known About Sooner

Olive oil is one of our go-to pantry staples. We use it for sauteeing veggies, brushing on meats before we put them on the grill or in the skillet, making salad dressing and so much more.

One thing we have noticed is that, depending on the brand of olive oil you buy, the opening is pretty large, which can pose a problem when you're looking for just a drizzle. When we run into this challenge, we often put our thumb over part of the spout to control the flow, but what if there was a better way?

Content creator and tip queen @thescaredycatgardener shared her favorite olive oil hack, and we can wait to give it a try in our kitchen. Here's what you need to know.

The Cool Trick For Making Your Olive Oil Pour More Slowly

According to @thescaredycatgardener, we've all been pouring olive oil the wrong way, and there is a better (right) way to do it.

"This hack is so easy and keeps you from pouring out too much! It’s especially helpful when drizzling olive oil on salad," she said in the caption to her Instagram post.

So what is the right way to pour olive oil? When you take off the lid to your olive oil, you will notice a pull ring inside of it. Pull that tab off to open the oil, then flip it upside down and put it back inside the top of the bottle, pressing the loop part into the bottle, but without pushing it all the way through. Then, when you pour the oil, it will come out in a stream, which gives you better control of the flow of oil.

"Good lord woman how do you figure these things out!!!" someone said on her post. We love this hack, but we're astounded that she figured this out, too. It's brilliant!

"Girl what ?! 🙌 I learned something today!" another person said. So did we! We love a good kitchen hack.

"Wait. WHAT?! How did I not know this?" another person added. We didn't, either, but now that we do we're definitely doing this.

"At this point, I’ve been doing everything wrong," someone else chimed in. We feel the same way, but thank goodness for people teaching us some really cool hacks like this one.

One note about this method: We've seen other reports about it not working unless you have this specific spout and pull tab combination, but it's definitely worth trying the next time you open a new bottle of oil.
