We might be in the peak of summer but when there were so many breathtaking beauty looks on the AW24 runways, it is never too early to save inspiration for your next salon visit.
Key trends from spring/summer – from copper locks to black bows – are still present and correct, but next season brings with it a more polished, grown-up feel. Gone are the shocking reds, and in its place, painterly, romantic versions of the hue. Accessories are worn on classic hairstyles (think couture taffeta bows on a plain ponytail), while overdone blow-outs make way for a more nonchalant – but not less elegant – finish.
Fringes are big news, too, and everyone can embrace it no matter your hair texture. Curly face-framers took centre stage at Tom Ford and Louis Vuitton while bangs at Miu Miu took on an edgier turn with choppy, textured finishes. Amidst the sea of bright blondes and high-shine brunettes, it is also refreshing to see the normalisation of grey hair on the runways at Batsheva and Balmain. For future brides and wedding guests, there are plenty of headpieces guaranteed to bring the drama on the big day.

The chicest hair trends for autumn/winter 2024
The Trend: Easy Waver
Sitting comfortably in between last summer’s picture-perfect Barbie blowouts and this year’s breezy 1970s ‘Woodstock waves’, expect to see laidback curls that still maintain a degree of elegance - as seen at Chloé.
“Next season will carry on a similar retro theme, but moving towards a more polished overall finish,” says Jake Schaverien, a stylist at Hari’s salon. For your next blow-dry, ask for roller or pin curls, then brush them out and add a high-shine finishing spray. Dyson’s Airwrap or Babyliss Thermo-Ceramic Rollers are great for creating the look at home.

The Trend: Choppy Fringe
Long, waterfall bangs ala Daisy Edgar-Jones will still reign supreme as the most versatile fringe style (and it is the easiest to maintain) but if you are feeling experimental, try the choppy, textured look that has been peppering the AW24 runways such as Miu Miu (left).
There is a cool, devil-may-care attitude here, but do let the pros give you the chop. “Consult your stylist, and discuss your face shape, hair texture, your overall hairstyle and your lifestyle,” says Hari’s hairstylist, Kirsten Finnigan. For styling, she recommends using a lightweight mousse or styling cream for definition and a texturising spray to maintain the ‘choppy’ effect.
“Lightly use a flat iron to tame flyaways and ensure a sleek finish while keeping some natural texture,” offers Finnigan.

The Trend: Aristocra-chic
For your next wedding party (or a Halloween ‘do), a veiled fascinator combines the glamour of the royals with the intrigue of a 1940s film noir starlet. Pair with a side-swept updo ala Richard Quinn (left) for the ultimate drama.

The Trend: Larger Than Life
Whether its scarves, barettes or taffeta bows at seen at Chanel's couture outing (left) designers are opting for bigger pieces to transform classic hairstyles such as low ponytails and gentle waves into real showstoppers.

The Trend: Silver Edge
While going grey is not a trend, it is refreshing to see more models with silver strands on the runways (see Balmain, left). Let yours live its best life with plenty of hydration through nourishing masks and lightweight oils. A silver neutralising shampoo will keep brassiness at bay while a glossing treatment or toner will help restore healthy shine.

The Trend: Clean Finish
A high-shine, almost lacquered effect took centre stage at the AW24 shows from Tory Burch (left) to Carolina Herrera. If summer embraced a more undone vibe, next season will see updos with a refined, extra polished finish – not a hair out of place. It’s an easy way to elevate the most basic style, such as a ballerina bun or a three-strand braid.

Forget social media and get your next copper hair inspiration from the halls of The National Portrait Gallery and the V&A instead. From Titian tones to Rosetti reds, painterly hues feel significantly more sophisticated for winter than summer’s cherry cola trend.
“Add lighter and darker tones of coppers throughout to represent a sunset-like feel and get creative with different warm palettes by adding gold, red and blending throughout,” suggests colourist Francesca Dixon, colour director at Hari's. “This can be achieved by applying one colour at the roots and a different colour from root to tip. You can use a glossing service to intensify it, too.”

The Trend: Glossy Brunettes
“Brunettes will gravitate towards richer, darker, and cooler bases,” says colourist Karolina Augutyte at Larry King. Deep chocolate browns, icy cool-toned brunettes, and glossy espresso shades will dominate, providing a sophisticated and polished look that complements the cooler months.”
Dark hair naturally reflects shine, so amplify the gleam with nourishing oil-serum hybrids and add a hydrating balm to disguise dry ends.

The Trend: With The Band
Not one for glitzy hairbands and flouncy bows? The minimalist headband – in monochrome shades of black and white – is still going strong. Spray some dry shampoo to give third day strands a life and sweep a headband over the crown.

The Trend: Milky Blonde
Update your sunkissed blonde to a creamier tone for the colder months. Think snowy hues Elsa from Frozen would be envious of. If that proves too bright, a buttery undertone can bring extra warmth to the face. Keep it from looking flat with “more lowlights weaved through for subtle texture and a brighter halo around the hairline,” says Hari’s colourist Melanie Smith.

The Trend: Fringe Benefits
If you’ve been debating the fringe, there are plenty of inspiration should you decide to finally take the plunge. For curly hair, “adding bangs can create a fresh and modern look”, says the hairstylist Kirsten Finnigan, who stresses the importance of working with someone who's an expert in curly hair.
Use a diffuser when drying your curls (and the fringe) to maintain the curl pattern. "Always cut curly bangs when the hair is dry. Wet curls shrink as they dry, so cutting them wet can result in bangs that are much shorter than intended." Protect your curls by sleeping in a silk bonnet or on a silk pillowcase and do use a diffuser attachment when blow-drying. "It keeps the curls intact and reduces frizz. Alternatively, air-drying is also a great option to maintain the natural curl pattern," says Finnigan.
