Chappell Roan is making her first Grammys count. She's not just here to turn heads on the red carpet in a Jean Paul Gaultier ballgown, or perform, or (hopefully) accept some awards. She's also there to send a message and support the LGBTQ+ community.

Speaking on the red carpet with GLAAD, Chappell took the time to send a message to the trans community. "It's brutal right now, but trans people have always existed and they will forever exist," she said. "And they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away, and that has to be protected more than anything because I would not be here without trans girls. Just know that pop music is thinking about you and cares about you, and I'm doing my best to really stand up for you in every way I can."

This isn't the first time Chappell has used her platform to send a message to the LGBTQ+ community. Accepting the Best New Artist award at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, she dedicated her award to drag artists and "queer and trans people who fuel pop." She also sent a strong message to those watching at home. "For all the queer kids in the Midwest watching right now, I see you, I understand you because I am one of you," she said. "And don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't be exactly who you want to be."

Chappell's hopeful message comes after Donald Trump targeted transgender people with executive orders. On the first day of his second term, Trump issued an order saying that the federal government would only recognize two sexes—female and male. He has since signed an order going after gender affirming care for those under 19 and seems poised to continue to push for anti-trans legislation. And it sounds like Chappell Roan will be fighting every step of the way.
