A historic community hall has been given a new lease of life after the refurbishment of its deteriorating 100-year-old roof, its supporters say.

Ruspidge Memorial Hall in the Forest of Dean has been renovated with a £46,000 grant from the Biffa Award communities fund, along with additional money from the National Lottery, the Bernard Sunley Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

The century-old building had faced an uncertain future due to its failing roof, supporters said.

Ruspidge Memorial Hall Secretary Nicky Packer said: "The outside of the hall is now looking stunning, with a new roof and with the front of the building smartened up."

Frequent slate failures required regular repairs to prevent water damage, hall staff said.

The refurbishment marked a significant milestone in preserving the space, which was continuing to host a wide range of activities and events for local residents, they added.

The community hall is currently home to several weekly groups and clubs, including health and wellbeing sessions, fitness, music, uniformed groups, dog and puppy training and art sessions.

Biffa Award grants manager Rachel Maidment said: "Ruspidge Memorial Hall is crucial to preserving the vibrant heart of local life.

"By providing a £46,000 grant for the much-needed roof renovation, we are ensuring that this historic hall can continue to serve its community for generations to come."
