Celine Is Launching Into Beauty With Lipstick

PARIS — Celine is making a major push into beauty with the launch of makeup this fall.

The French house teased the line in its fashion film for winter 2024, which broke Tuesday. Glimpses of the lipstick appear throughout the spot, which feature models striding through numerous tony Paris locations, such as the Musée Bourdelle and Salle Pleyel concert hall.

“’La Collection de L’Art de Triomphe’ film marks the birth of Celine Beauté, the first cosmetics line in the house’s history,” the brand said in a statement.

Color cosmetics are painting the town. Makeup was the fastest-growing segment in prestige beauty by revenue in the U.S. last year. And within that category, lip makeup proved to be the strongest performer, with sales up 31 percent — representing growth two-times faster than the overall category, according to Circana.

Celine Beauté is the brainchild of Celine artistic and image director Hedi Slimane and was born in 2023. It dovetailed from his launch of the Celine haute parfumerie collection, which debuted in 2019.

In the fashion film, models sport La Peau Nue lipstick, part of the full 15-shade Le Rouge Celine collection that will be sold starting in 2025. But this fall, Celine will launch the first satin lipstick shade, dubbed Rouge Triomphe.

“The creation of Celine Beauté comes to enrich the cultural roots, promoting a French idea of femininity and allure, distilled over the last five years by Hedi Slimane in his new institutional codes for the Maison Celine,” the house said in the statement.

New beauty collections will be launched by the brand each season. These could include lip balms, mascaras, eyeliners, eye pencils, loose powders and nail polishes, among other product categories.

European luxury groups are accelerating their move into beauty. Kering has taken its beauty in-house, and Richemont is building a Laboratoire de Haute Parfumerie.

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Celine’s parent company, last March named a new chairman and chief executive officer of the group’s Perfumes and Cosmetics division, Stéphane Rinderknech. That branch last year registered sales of 8.27 billion euros, up 7 percent in reported terms against 2022.
