Carvel Is Selling Soft Serve Ice Cream for 90 Cents in Honor of Their 90th Anniversary

Fans can get a small cup or cone for less than $1 on Aug. 19

Carvel is serving up a sweet soft serve deal.

The home of Fudgie the Whale is celebrating their 90th birthday on Monday, Aug. 19 (National Soft Serve Day) with 90 cents soft serve ice cream. The company first started in summer 1934 after the founder Tom Carvel's ice cream truck broke down. He was forced to sell "slightly melted ice cream" from the truck, according to the website, and in turn started a new category of dessert: soft serve.

Now, customers can get a small cup or cone of any soft serve flavor for the discounted price on Aug. 19 in honor of the happy accident. There is a limit of one treat per person and toppings will raise the 90-cents price tag.

Carvel ice cream shops have several soft serve flavors to choose from. Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry are all classics but some shops also offers flavors like black raspberry, chocolate hazelnut and Carvelite versions of select flavors (a less-caloric version). Customers who can’t wait for summer to end are in for a treat: Carvel’s pumpkin cheesecake soft serve is also coming.

The fall-flavored treat is available earlier than last year — it will be at stores nationwide beginning Aug. 15. And it's not just a soft serve — pumpkin cheesecake comes as ice cream, shakes, Dashers, Flying Saucers and ice cream pops. But only the pumpkin cheesecake soft serve is eligible for the 90-cents deal on Aug. 19.

Carvel is also selling a vintage-inspired merch line in honor of the big birthday. T-shirts, coffee mugs, baby onesies and other accessories are decked out with illustrations of Carvel’s original shop and logo. Plus, there are items designed with an image of an original Captain Carvel comic book cover. All of the items are available online.

Carvel kickstarted its 90th-anniversary celebrations in April by reintroducing a fan-favorite flavor from the 1970s: the orange dreamy creamy.

Wendy’s also has dessert deals for customers. Guests can score a small Frosty for just $1 through Sept. 15 and there is no limit.

The unlimited $1 deal applies to small chocolate and triple berry Frostys. The fruity option is only available for a little while longer — a press release announcing the $1 deal encouraged customers to "savor the final days" of the triple berry flavor.
