Carrie Underwood Thrills Fans With Heavy Metal Alter Ego: 'Loved Seeing This Side of Her'
American Idol judge Carrie Underwood briefly broke from her country music roots so she could rock out with a heavy metal performance—and fans loved the completely different side of her.
On March 9, Season 23 of American Idol premiered on ABC. The episode also marked the "Before He Cheats" crooner's debut as a judge alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
Among the most memorable moments of Sunday's show was when Underwood sang with contestant Kobyn Melton, who goes by the stage name Insite.
"We're starting to learn about Carrie's alter egos," Bryan said after Richie pointed out that Underwood "knew every word" of Insite's audition song, Korn's "Freak on a Leash."
"I'm jukebox Carrie," the 42-year-old joked.
She then left her chair at the judge's panel to join Insite for Drowning Pool's 2001 song "Bodies." During the high-energy duet, Underwood hyped up Insite while complementing his performance. He head-banged while she added some fun dance moves, to the delight of both Bryan and Richie.
All three judges gave the 18-year-old from Naples, Fla., a "yes"—earning him a ticket to the next stage of the competition.
