Brenda Song and Macaulay Culkin support each other on and off screen, and that sometimes includes popping up in each other’s projects.
Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE about her latest role in Netflix’s Running Point, the actress, 36, reveals how her fiancé ended up making a last-minute cameo.
In the season 1 finale, Culkin, 44, makes a hilarious appearance as a heckler during the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball team as another character uses the game to profess his love publicly by singing a Taylor Swift song.
The camera eventually pans to a frustrated Culkin, decked out in Waves merch, who is impatiently waiting for Billie Eilish to sing the national anthem.
According to Song, the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo was completely unplanned and entirely Culkin’s idea.
“He was just on set and he was joking about, ‘Oh, I'm just going to sneak in the background and not say or do anything,’” she explains of how the cameo came to fruition. “We thought that'd be funny. And then there was a heckler [character] and they're like, ‘Well, do you want to be the heckler?’”
“It was supposed to be just him in the background and Easter egg for us and then it just snowballed,” she reveals. “So it happened on the fly, to be honest.”

Macaulay Culkin and Brenda SongOf course, this isn’t the first time Culkin has made a funny appearance in one of Song’s shows. Fittingly, the Home Alone actor made a brief cameo in the Christmas episode of Song’s Hulu series Dollface, where he played the love interest of Shay Mitchell's character.
“No, it's very silly,” Song says of Culkin continuously appearing in her projects, jokingly adding. “Stop following me to work!”

Brenda Song at Netflix's 'Running Point' PremiereWhile speaking with PEOPLE, Song also opened up about how Culkin supports her offscreen as she juggles her busy life as a mom of two and actress.
“The only reason I've been able to continuously do what I do for as long as I have is my family,” she explains. “When I was younger, it was my mom, my dad and my two brothers, they were my biggest supporters. Now, it's my parents, my family, and my partner. It's just knowing that when I'm here, I know that everything is OK.”
“When you have kids, they're always on your mind,” she continues. “And knowing that my mom and my dad, who are so funny, they're the ones watching my babies right now. I know Mac is working today. It's very rare that we're both working and he's on set today, but I don't even worry. I know that my parents are with my kids and it's showing support in little ways. I'm so lucky. I have such a support system. I would not be here without the people surrounding me.”
