Brenda Song Favors Fringe in Tartan Monse Dress on ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show,’ Talks ‘Running Point’
Brenda Song put an edgy spin on the prep trend for her appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Monday. The actress sat down with guest host Simu Liu to discuss her new Netflix show, “Running Point,” which stars Kate Hudson.
Song modeled an asymmetrical tweed tartan dress from Monse’s spring 2019 collection, which featured fringe trim and subtle houndstooth stitching. She also added on stacked silver rings and a pair of leather knee-high boots. The “Last Showgirl” star currently works with stylist Jordan Grossman.

Monse’s spring 2019 collection played on preppy codes. Between the “quiet luxury” and “old money” trends, heritage prints and silhouettes have made a major comeback with Gen Z as they seek to emulate styles preferred by the upper class.
“It was a strong collection, thematically inspired by a raid on your rich grandmother’s closet,” WWD wrote of Monse’s spring 2019 presentation. “Her tweeds were twisted, cut and pulled into jackets, tops and dresses that fell off the shoulder or cut away over wide leg cargo pants and chain-printed scarf dresses. Rugby tops, sweater and ponchos also got the deconstructed treatment and looked equally plucky on the girls and the guys.”
Speaking to Liu, Song discussed the real-life inspiration behind “Running Point,” out now on Netflix. The sports comedy was co-created by Mindy Kaling.
“The show is loosely based off of Jeanie Buss whose father Jerry Bus owns the Lakers. [Running Point is about] her journey running the Lakers,” Song explained. “Kate plays Isla, who finds out basically overnight that she’s going to be running this team and the hijinks that happen because it’s a family business.”
Song described the gig as a “dream job,” as she’s a major fan of basketball. Though the sport, she clarifies, is just one aspect of the show.
“Basketball is just a vehicle to showcase these crazy characters and their day to day lives,” Song shared. “It’s been such a blast because I get to work with Kate fricking Hudson.”
