‘The Braxtons’ Family Returns to We TV in New Series, Despite Their Previous Clash Over ‘Braxton Family Values’ Pay

The Braxtons are returning to We TV — two years after the death of Traci Braxton, a singer, actress and TV/radio personality who appeared on all seven seasons of their previous series for the AMC Networks-owned cabler, “Braxton Family Values.”

“The Braxtons” will feature remaining family members Toni, Towanda, Trina, Tamar and matriarch Ms. Evelyn, reuniting “to share new love, success, heartbreak, ongoing family dynamics and so much more,” We TV announced Tuesday during AMC Networks’ portion of the Television Critics Assn.’s Winter 2024 press tour.

According to We TV, the new series will chronicle the Braxtons during the pandemic quarantine, and chronicle the aftermath of the death of Traci, who died at 50 in 2022 after a battle with esophageal cancer.

“Thank you all for sharing our lives,” Braxton matriarch Evelyn said in a statement. “I hope that through each one of our experiences, you’ll grow with us. Inspiring you in your endeavors, and teaching you the importance of family, love, and experiencing life. Remember, we’re not perfect, we’re only human. Look at God.”

The hour long episodes will follow “the fast-paced lives of Toni, Towanda, Trina and Tamar as they balance relationships, motherhood, careers, family and, most importantly, their sisterhood.”

“Braxton Family Values” aired for seven seasons on We TV, from 2011 to 2020, and also spawned the spinoff series “Tamar & Vince.” The run was marked by occasional disagreements between the Braxton family and We TV over their compensation for the show. Tamar later cut ties with We TV after she alleged that the network “betrayed…overworked, and underpaid” her.

At the time, which came after an attempt to take her own life, Tamar also highlighted the need for there to be a union for reality TV personalities, writing on social media that they currently have “no formal representation that protects our labor, our rights, our voices.” (Such a conversation has become more prevalent inside the unscripted series community over the past year.)

As for the new series, We TV shared an update on the family members: “This season will feature Toni launching her Las Vegas residency, ‘Love and Laughter,’ with Cedric the Entertainer at the Cosmopolitan. Towanda is balancing business and motherhood as she raises two teenagers, all while playing a major role in the life of her nephew, Kevin, who is navigating life without his mother, Traci. Trina is balancing her businesses and being a mother to her two sons navigating adulthood. And Tamar is expanding her music and media empire, balancing motherhood, and navigating how to juggle it all.”

“The Braxtons” will also be produced by a new company: Exec producers include Tara Long and Ri-Karlo Handy for Blink49 and Datari Turner for Datari Turner Productions. Toni, Tamar, Trina, Towanda and Evelyn Braxton are also EPs, while Angela Molloy, We TV’s senior VP of development and original production, is also an exec producer.

“It is not overstating things to say this is one of the most significant developments in the history of We TV and a moment the fans have been waiting for since the final episode of ‘Braxton Family Values’ aired on December 17, 2020,” said Brett Dismuke, head of content, We TV and ALLBLK. “The Braxtons are one of the founding families of reality television and We TV viewers were along for the ride through every moment of their original pioneering series, which spanned 148 unforgettable episodes. We are thrilled to welcome them back and once again be able to share these dynamic relationships and all the highs, lows, triumphs, setbacks and drama that fall in between.”
