Beyoncé Finally Wins Album Of The Year For ‘Cowboy Carter’
At last, Beyoncé has won the Recording Academy’s most coveted honor.
After becoming the most-awarded artist in Grammy Awards history, it’s hard to believe the music icon has gone her entire career without winning a single gramophone for Album of the Year. That all changed Sunday evening, though, when Beyoncé finally took home the prestigious award for her groundbreaking, genre-bending “Cowboy Carter” album.
“It’s been many, many years,” the singer acknowledged in her brief acceptance speech, in which she thanked every songwriter, collaborator and producer who contributed to her album.
Beyoncé also dedicated her Album of The Year win to “Cowboy Carter” featured artist and country pioneer Linda Martell before concluding her speech.
“I hope we just keep pushing forward, opening doors,” she said.
The 67th annual Grammy Awards marks Beyoncé’s fifth time being up for Album of the Year, following nominations for “Renaissance,” “Lemonade,” “Beyoncé” and “I Am... Sasha Fierce.” She received 11 total nominations this year, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Country Album. “Cowboy Carter” won for country album earlier in the award ceremony.
The album award has been a long time coming for Beyoncé, especially after the most recent upset, when Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House” album won instead in 2023.
The singer’s husband, Jay-Z, had been quite vocal following her Grammy snubs over the years, but the rapper made his feelings clear at last year’s ceremony when he called out the Recording Academy on its own stage.
“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year,” Jay-Z proclaimed while accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.
“Think about that,” he added. “The most Grammys, never won album of the year — that doesn’t work.”
That’s not the case anymore.
But even with her milestone win, it seems Beyoncé long stopped putting much credence into the Recording Academy’s Grammy decisions. She sent a notable jab on her “Cowboy Carter” track “Sweet Honey Buckiin’” last year, saying, “A-O-T-Y, I ain’t win, I ain’t stuntin’ ’bout them, take that shit on the chin, come back and fuck up the pen.”
And she did just that.
