How to: Oriental sideboard

Gather your supplies

  • Old sideboard

  • Dulux Wash & Wear 101 Advanced Low Sheen in Black

  • Bristol Easy Living Low Sheen in Hi-C Red

  • paintbrushes

  • Water Chrysanthemum three-piece stencil

  • stencil brush

  • repositionable mounting spray

  • Rub ’n’ Buff Wax Metallic Finish in Autumn Gold or similar

  • paper towel

  • lint-free cloth

Here’s how

Step 1: Remove the handles and any fittings. Sand the surface to smooth out any irregularities and to create a key for the paint to adhere to.

Step 2: Paint interior of sideboard red and leave to dry. Apply a second coat of paint for an even coverage.

Step 3: Paint the exterior of the sideboard with 2-3 coats of black paint, allowing it to dry between coats.

Step 4: Working with 1 stencil at a time, apply repositionable spray to back of stencil then stick it onto the sideboard. Dip stencil brush into metallic wax and wipe sides of brush on paper towel to remove excess wax. Place brush tip on paper towel and swirl, working wax up bristles of brush. Lightly stencil with a circular motion, working into the cut-out areas. Remove stencil, reposition and repeat, loading stencil brush with wax as before. Leave to dry for 2 hours then lightly buff gold stencil with lint-free cloth. Replace handles.
