Betsy Brandt Plays a Widow Who Leaps at a New Opportunity in “The Grotto” Trailer (Exclusive)

'The Grotto,' which marks Tony Award-winning actor Joanna Gleason's directorial debut, releases in select theaters Oct. 18

Betsy Brandt stars as woman offered a second chance at life in her new movie.

PEOPLE is premiering the trailer for The Grotto, directed by Tony Award-winning actor Joanna Gleason in her feature writing and directorial debut.

The trailer meets Breaking Bad alum Brandt, 51, as Alice, a woman grieving the recent loss of her fiancé Nick after his death by suicide. To her surprise, Alice's late fiancé leaves her a 50 percent stake in a business called The Grotto, in Joshua Tree, Calif., which she has never heard of. When she visits the establishment and finally meets its owner, who does not appear aware of Nick's death, Alice finds herself unexpectedly thrown into a the business' financials and potentially a new opportunity for love along the way.

Filmmaker Gleason, also known for her role in 1997's Boogie Nights, makes her feature directorial debut after some experience directing episodes of television series in the 1990s. She also wrote The Grotto's script as her first screenwriting credit.

"I don’t know a single person in their late 40s or older who hasn’t questioned the decisions they’ve made in life," Gleason, 74, tells PEOPLE. "What if you’ve just been going along, letting everybody else decide for you? And then what if everything goes away? Where do you start over, how do you start over?"

"I found myself in my 40s suddenly adrift. Job ended, lost my apartment, marriage over," the filmmaker adds, noting that much of the film has been inspired by her own life. "So much I had to figure out. And where could I put my faith anymore. Suddenly a whole new cast of characters entered my life and it was up to me to see if I wanted to take a leap of faith."

The Grotto also costars Steve Kazee, Jonathan Del Arco, Dan Bucatinsky and Lindsay Mendez.

The movie releases in select theaters Oct. 18.
