Variety of potatoes

There's a seriously simple summer tip going around TikTok and it will completely change the way you prep for your summer barbecues. TikToker @itslizmiu posted a potato salad hack that's going viral right now and with good reason—it's not only a beautifully elevated and updated version of the classic side dish but it also comes together in no time and requires very little cooking (or cooking skills).

How Do You Make Tater Tot Potato Salad?

The recipe uses similar flavors and ingredients as the traditional potato salad but starts off with one genius ingredient from the depths of your freezer: tater tots. Bake about half a bag of tater tots until they're warmed through and very lightly browned. Take them out of the oven and smash them on the baking sheet with the bottom of a glass, then stick them back in the oven until they're extra crispy, golden and absolutely perfect.

While the tots cook, make the dressing, which is a combination of mayo, Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, wholegrain mustard, a minced clove of garlic, finely chopped cucumber, chopped red onion and a handful of chopped herbs, including dill, parsley and chives. Toss the crispy tots with the dressing and dig in.

What I Thought of Tater Tot Potato Salad

I tried this as soon as it came across my FYP and then proceeded to send it around to my friends, bookmarking it to make it for a real picnic this summer instead of what it actually was (a Wednesday night). And you don't have to take my word for it. With more than 4.6 million views, others are in full agreement.

"Like chips and dip went to private school 🥰," said one fan—and I couldn't agree more. "I wouldn't even mix the potatoes in. I would use them as a chip and eat it like dip!" says another TikToker. Others had given the recipe a try and made it their own. "Added bacon, substituted pickles for cucumber, and left out the dill. It was AMAZINGGG" says a commenter.

The only caveat? You must eat it right away or the tots get a bit soggy. Once you have a single forkful, though, we're confident you'll be up to that challenge.

This is not only a delicious and vibrantly beautiful summer side dish, but this hack ensures you'll never make a sad, mushy potato salad ever again. Make it, eat it and thank us later.
