Benjamin Levy Aguilar on Torres' Having to Face the Consequences of Past Actions on 'Chicago P.D.'
As the saying goes, actions have consequences and tonight, on Chicago P.D., Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) is facing the results of his inappropriate relationship with Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez), the former wife and now widow of abusive drug lord Rafael Perez (Julio Cesar Cedillo).
When investigating Rafael, Gloria and Torres became unsuitably close, which is a no-no when he was able to flip her and make her a CI in order to bring down Perez's fentanyl operation. But now, from what we see in the promo for tonight’s "Contrition" episode, it looks as if Gloria has taken over her late husband’s drug empire, putting Torres’ career in jeopardy for his past transgression when Intelligence begins investigating the new drug dealer in town.
“He did what he did,” Aguilar tells Parade. “Right or wrong, he did what he did, and it came back and bit him. Exactly what you fear, right? And now he has to deal with the consequences of his actions. The problem is he’s putting everyone on the line. Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is incredible for standing by him and supporting him through this time, but she’s in danger, too, and there’s a lot of emotions that come with that that he has to deal with.”
Torres, who always tries to be helpful and do the right thing, feels that the responsibility for putting his career and Burgess’ in jeopardy is all on him because it was his actions that have led to the current predicament, so he’s feeling a lot of guilt, especially because if his past relationship with Gloria is revealed, it could mean prison, not just losing his badge, so it’s high stakes.
Torres is relatively new to Intelligence, and he’s trying to find his way because he comes from a different background than all the other members of the team. He knows that Voight (Jason Beghe) saw something in him or he wouldn’t have brought him onboard, but he still feels as if he’s different.

“I do think that’s spot on,” Aguilar says. “I don’t know if he thinks he doesn’t belong, but he is different, there’s no denying it. There’s no denying the way he polices is different, the skills he brings are different, the way he is, is just different. He’s of a different nature, which is such a tool to have, but also look at the consequences, too. It’s like having more of a question mark on the team. A very effective question mark, but also still finding out who he is in a way through it all. He’s young, he’s gone through so much, he has such a skill set, but also a lot of demons.”
Newer to Intelligence than Torres is Officer Kiana Cook (Toya Turner), who came to Intelligence in a past episode looking for Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and found Torres, who was willing to help her even though he had just met her. And as mentioned, that’s the kind of man he is, someone who wants to help.

“Everything that’s happening in this episode is because he wanted to help, right?” Aguilar continues. “He lied on his badge to help Gloria. A lot of people wouldn’t have done that, but he saw the best in her. He’s always trying to save people. He was trying to save Mia (Sharlene Cruz). The entire time we saw him with his first love interest, he believed that she could choose a different life, just as he believed that Gloria could choose a different life. He’s always been there for his community, trying to see the best in them. That is who he is, but sometimes those decisions can be debated morally if this was right or wrong, but that’s just who he is. It bites him.”
Chicago P.D. airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
