Ben and Jerry’s giving away free ice cream

In good news for ice cream lovers, Ben and Jerry’s will be giving away free scoops on Tuesday as part of its annual Free Cone Day.

Free Cone Day began in 1979 when co founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield survived their first freezing winter as a two-person ice cream business in Vermont, United States.

More than 40 years later, the tradition continues, with fans invited to head out and grab a free scoop at almost every store around Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday 16 April between 12pm and 8pm.

Fans can pick any flavour they like, including the two Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop exclusive flavours, Impretzively Fudged - a chocolate ice cream with fudge-covered pretzel pieces and pretzel swirls - and PB S’more - a toasted marshmallow ice cream with peanut butter cups, graham cracker pieces and marshmallow swirls.

Ice cream enthusiasts should consider clearing their calendars for the afternoon because they are welcome to line up for a complimentary cone as many times as they like, with Ben and Jerry’s aiming to serve more than the 180,000 free ice creams it gave away in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 when Free Cone Day returned after a four year pause.

Globally, the goal is even bigger, with the brand hoping to give away more than one million scoops around the world, after handing out more than 970,000 complimentary ice creams across the globe on Free Cone Day in 2023.

“We know together with our fans we can break 1 million scoops,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO Dave Stever, who served ice cream himself at the Scoop Shop in Vermont on Free Cone Day in 2023, said.

“We’re asking our fans to really bring it this year: invite their friends, family, and neighbours, and help us beat our goal of 1 million scoops on Free Cone Day 2024.”
