On Aug. 21, 1987, summer vacations changed forever when Dirty Dancing premiered.

The film told the stories of resort dance director Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze, then 34) and young guest Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey, then 27), and how the two unlikely paramours ultimately fell in love.

"Jennifer really jumped into this stuff," Swayze told PEOPLE at the time. "She came out with a sensuality in her dancing that staggered everybody."

The film was a blockbuster, earning more than $210 million at the box office, gifting viewers with musical hits and iconic choreography plus some quotable lines ("Nobody puts Baby in a corner!").

As the movie marks its 37th anniversary, look back at these vintage pics of Swayze, Grey and more of the movie's stars at the film's various premieres.

At the N.Y.C. premiere, Jennifer Grey was flanked by her famous parents, actress mom Jo and dad, actor Joel Grey. Despite her family's roots, though (her grandfather was an entertainer, too), Grey was told she couldn't act 'til adulthood.

"My father wanted to make sure we had as normal a life as possible as children,'' she told PEOPLE in 1987. "He wanted me to know who I was before I got my sense of worth from perfect strangers who were casting things."

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2022, Jennifer Grey addressed the rumors that she and Patrick Swayze didn't completely see eye to eye on set.

"The same way Baby and Johnny were not supposed to be together … a natural match, right? And we weren't a natural match. And the fact that we needed to be a natural match created a tension. Because normally when someone's not a natural, you … both people move on, but we were forced to be together. And our being forced to be together created a kind of a synergy, or like a friction. I actually just had a thought about Patrick. I feel like if I could say anything to him now I would say, 'I'm so sorry that I couldn't just appreciate and luxuriate in who you were, instead of me wishing you were more like what I wanted you to be.' "

Swayze died in 2009 after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. He was 57.
