Behind the Scenes of PEOPLE's Meet the Disruptors Cover Shoot
Get all the details on the up-and-coming artists' glam looks
Every artist loves a blank canvas, so it's no surprise that the makeup artist on the set of PEOPLE's "Meet the Disruptors" cover shoot was excited to work with five up-and-coming musical talents who are still “discovering their image, their brand, their music styles, and of course their makeup style!”
Nicole Faulkner, the senior director of artistry and events at e.l.f. Cosmetics (better known on Instagram as @lipsticknick) was on set as the makeup artist for PEOPLE's Meet the Disruptors cover shoot, glamming up five of the artists on the makeup brand's just-launched musical project, Get Ready with Music, the Album.
“My vision for this shoot was to highlight each individual artist’s best features and infuse elements of their personal styles while also maintaining a cohesive look and feel for them as a whole,” says Faulkner.

“I was able to execute this with the help of an amazing glam and styling team. Denim ended up being a staple in the group's wardrobe. I wanted to contrast those cool denim tones with warm earth tones for their makeup looks,” she adds.
For Black Gatsby, that meant the deep berry-hued blush he "loves" to highlight his cheekbones (not to mention the setting powder, which, he says, "changed my entire makeup experience").
Mariangela is a fan of all things that glitter, especially eyeshadows — “it’s part of my brand as an artist,” she says — and for '90s baby Charlotte Rose Benjamin, e.l.f.’s clear brow & lash mascara is a sure staple.
e.l.f. 's People Development Coordinator (and performer of "Dream" on the album), Olivia Reyes, swears by the brand’s Soft Glam foundation, while Betty Who is a fan of the Pout Clout lip plumping pen.
“I love the shades it comes in and the texture and finish is gorgeous,” Who says. “I’ve been wearing it on stage religiously.”
Below, Faulkner provides her best tips and tricks for disrupting your makeup routine to get a new, revolutionary look.
Q. What are your must-have hero products?
Hands down the entire Power Grip family! Power Grip Primer and Power Grip Dewy Setting Spray for the long-wearing grip and dewy sheen. And the entire Halo Glow family for effortless-looking, ethereal, glowy skin!
Q. What's one tip you have to make the makeup "makeup," as Gen Z says?
Never underestimate the power of good thorough skin prep! This makes all the difference when it comes to how the makeup will sit on the skin, and how long it will last. Cleanse, tone, moisturize and prime! Power Grip Primer is essential for any makeup look you want to last all day or night — whether you're performing a sold-out show or stepping out with friends.
Q. One step in the makeup routine you can't skip?
For me, it's setting spray!! I don't care if I'm already 20 minutes late — you better believe I'm gonna drench my face with a setting spray! I love the Power Grip Dewy Setting Spray because it makes the makeup look a little more "lived in" and less powdered/made-up. It gives a natural dewy glow while still setting my face for long-lasting glam.
