Grant Denyer has been hospitalised this week after a torn lower disc left him bedridden, his wife has revealed.

Fighting back tears this morning, Chezzi Denyer revealed her husband is in ‘incredible pain’ after being hospitalised early this week.

The embattled Gold Logie winner has been absent from his usual spot on 2Day FM’s morning show Grant, Ed & Ash this week, and now his wife has come on air to share an update with co-hosts Ed Kavalee and Ash London.

She revealed her husband had an annular fissure – a tear in the lower disc – leaving him bedridden and in a lot of pain.

“He’s in a lot of pain and it’s really difficult to watch. It took me back to when he broke his back 10 years ago because the pain is so intense when he moves that you can’t help but get quite angry, and that’s not in his nature,” she said.

“Also on top of that, he feels like he’s let the world down, he’s let you guys down because he wants to be at work and it’s a really busy period, so he’s just doing his best.”

The TV and radio personality struggled with prescription medication abuse after he broke his back in 2008. His wife says they are now trying to deal with the risk of using pain medications.

“He was in such intense, acute pain when we got into hospital and they checked his vitals and said this guy needs to be given a massive dose of morphine, his blood pressure is through the roof,” Chezzi explained.

She said at the time the couple weren’t ‘really thinking about it’ and have since sought out guidance of how to proceed.

“So we’ve had to take some really good advice and guidance and we’ve finally found something that is a very stable drug that will allow him just to rest and not have the big patches of pain.”

Last week Denyer opened up about a dark time following his previous injury, when he became addicted to prescription medication.

The TV and radio personality said he would often try and ‘escape’ his home life and wife Chezzi, whom he’s grateful for being “still here because I put her through the wringer”.

In a post published to her Instagram yesterday, Chezzi referenced their heartbreaking past alongside an image of her husband in hospital: “It’s been quite a number of years since I’ve seen my hubby in so much pain.”

She also clarified that the injury wasn’t a racing accident like his 2008 injury, rather the dad-of-two hurt himself driving in stakes for new trees in the couple’s paddock.

On air last week Denyer made waves with his candid description of how the ‘hardcore’ medication he took to ease the pain had other effects on his body, including making him feel disoriented and experience hallucinations last week on the show.

“With the recovery comes a lot of medication, they don’t tell you the effects that the medication can have on you because that is worse than the injury itself,” he told his co-hosts.

Feeling out of touch with reality, the Dancing With The Stars host detailed the times he hallucinated, often after having nightmares.
