The Topknot Is Over And Other Beauty Revelations To Know Now
The topknot is over
We know, we know - it’s the handiest hairstyle that ever was – but according to celebrity hairstylist Kevin Murphy, it’s time to let go of the humble topknot.
“This season’s hair is all about a natural dishevelment,” he explains. “A softer, frizzier texture is coming in, but you can still keep it looking polished with the addition of an Alice band to pull your hair back from your face.”
Murphy, who did the Chloe Sevigny inspired hair at Myer’s recent autumn/winter show, says the natural texture will even apply to ponytails.

Metallic hair is in
Blondes will go even icier this season, predicts Murphy, who also cites red hair as another huge autumn/winter trend.
In addition, soft rose golds and muted silvers will be welcome additions to the flat colours of season’s past.
“It shouldn’t look like you’ve just painted your hair with a metallic though,” Murphy cautions. “It’s more about a subtle undercurrent throughout the hair which catches the light.”
And if you think you can’t pull off such a shade? “It doesn’t necessarily matter,” says Murphy. “Now it’s not so much about whether it suits your skin tone, but whether you can pull it off or not.”
Reflective contouring is the new contouring
The matte looked employed by Kim Kardashian is waning in place of a dewier complexion.
According to Napoleon Perdis makeup artist Kate Squires, the key to this look is using pops of light (essentially 'strobing') to contour the face.
“Rather than brushing bronzer over your cheekbones, this look is more about lightening them up,” explains Squires. “Tap a luminser over the parts of your face where the sun would normally hit and your face will glow instantly.”
Squires cites the Napoleon Perdis Light Switch Luminser as a must-have, which Perdis himself recommends keeping in your car, handbag or desk draw – whenever the time calls for a little reflective contouring really!
You’ll be scared of the new season eye trends
But it doesn’t mean you can’t pull them off! According to Sephora training manager, Angelique Hogan, blue is having a moment.
“It’s certainly not for the faint of heart, but there are ways to incorporate it into your look with going overboard,” she explains. “Try using a pencil liner first before you dive into the eyeshadow.
“For a paler skin tone, I would go light and clear and bright, while darker skin tones can add some depth.”

Cushion compacts are having a moment
These have been in the works for a while (particularly in Korea), but consumers in Australia are also snapping them up for their ease-of-use.
“The cushion compact is a very layerable product,” Peach & Lily founder Alicia Yoon explains. “Unlike most foundation products, you can keep layering it without caking.”
Adds Hogan, “women in Australia still like high coverage – though you’ll sometimes find the younger consumer wanting a more dense base while the more mature consumer wants something lightweight. The cushion compact is great for this because you can build up to your desired coverage.”
The new lip trend will make you feel like a vampire
Forget pastels – autumn/winter ushers in a darker, deeper lip colour.
“My generation is very celebrity driven,” says 19-year-old Taylor Frankel, who co-owns the brand Nudestix. “We’re influenced by people like Cara Delevingne and Kylie Jenner, who have both been rocking a darker lip for some time now.”

And don’t be fooled into thinking it takes a lot of work to get the look – “you can simply swipe it on like a stain with a chubby pencil,” explains Frankel. “This season is not about looking perfectly done.”
