Australian beauty and makeup company MCoBeauty has issued an urgent recall of one of its most popular products.

MCoBeauty LipLight Lip Shine Gloss contain an LED light in the lid, along with a built-in mirror.

The product was sold at Woolworths, as well as Big W and Chemist Warehouse.

Three batches of product have been sold in Australia. Batches A23A08 and A23A10 passed the safety tests for products containing button batteries, but did not include required warning information.

Batch A23A07 was found to “not comply with the mandatory safety standards for products containing button batteries”, according to an alert sent out by Product Saftey Australia.

“The button/coin batteries are not adequately secured and are accessible to young children,” Product Safety Australia said.

“There is a risk of choking or serious injury if young children gain access to the button/coin batteries and swallow or place them inside their body.”

MCoBeauty chief executive and founder Shelley Sullivan said batch A23A07 failed the test as a low force was able to make the battery compartment accessible.

“Thankfully, the battery compartment itself retained the batteries and they were not found to be released during the test, which is an obvious relief to everyone at MCoBeauty as this was our greatest concern when the issue was first raised,” she said.

“Notwithstanding this, it is of obvious concern that the battery compartments became accessible at all.

“They shouldn’t have become accessible and for this we are sorry to any consumer who purchased this product. We should be doing better.

“The products have been on the market since October 2023 and it was only in April of this year that any issue was raised by consumers.

“If anyone has the product we recommend that they go to our product recall page and assess the information provided relevant to their batch, and get in touch with us if they have one of the affected A23A07 batch of product.”

Consumers can return affected items directly to MCoBeauty or any retailers that have sold the batch, which were purchased between October 1, 2023 and April 17, 2024.

Consumers can find the batch number on the bottom of the product.

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, consumer goods containing button/coin batteries “must meet secure battery requirements and are subject to compliance testing”.

“All consumer goods that contain a button/coin battery must be secure (and) must not release the batteries during reasonably foreseeable use or misuse of the product,” the ACCC outlines.

“This is mandatory whether or not the battery is intended to be user-replaceable.”
