This bamboo dresser from Facebook Marketplace gets a major upgrade

Don’t overlook your old and outdated furniture — you can always turn it into something new with the right DIY hacks. In this episode of ITK: Furniture Flip, our host and expert furniture flipper Bre Bringier (@redesignbybre) shows us how to flip an outdated bamboo dresser with just a little maintenance and some paint.

Bre is working on a bamboo dixie dresser she bought on Facebook Marketplace for $50. The piece looks aged and worn out, so she’s going to paint it and shine the knobs to reimagine the dresser for a beachy, boho appeal. Here’s how you can revamp a bamboo dresser:

Tools

  • Wood filler

  • Sanding block

  • Citric acid

  • Gloves

  • Wire brushes

  • Paint roller

  • Paintbrush

  • Blue paint

  • Top coat

Instructions

Start by removing the knobs from the bamboo dresser. If they’re rusty and tarnished, like those on Bre’s dresser, add two tablespoons of citric acid to two cups of boiling water. Place the hardware in the water for 10 to 15 minutes. Use the wire brushes to scrub off the tarnish after removing the knobs from the water. Be sure to wear gloves when working with citric acid.

2. Next, create “wood filler soup” with eight parts wood filler and two parts water to fill in the small scratches on the top of the dresser. Use gloved hands to spread the mixture in circles across the dresser top. Let dry for 30 minutes.

3. Once the wood filler has dried, sand the dresser across all sides and grooves.

4. Paint the dresser using a paint roller for larger surfaces and a paintbrush for small spaces and grooves. Then, apply the top coat using a paint roller, making sure to smooth out any bubbles.

5. Finally, put the knobs back on the drawers.
