Ash Barty shuts down claim from Prince William after Wimbledon win: 'Oh no'

She's a tennis queen herself, so Ash Barty didn't look out of place as she mingled with royals Prince William and Kate after her epic Wimbledon win - even shutting down a claim from William in front of Kate, that she didn't 'have any nerves'.

Barty became the first Australian woman to win Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980, and met with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after celebrating the win with her team.

Kate, who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, had already presented the trophies to winner Ash and Czech finalist Karolina Pliskova after the match.

But this time the Aussie tennis superstar and world no. 1 had a bit more of a chance to chat with the British royals in the Wimbledon clubhouse.

Speaking to Ash about her win, Prince William said: "You didn’t look like you had any nerves today at all."

But Ash laughed as she shut down that claim, telling the duke: "Oh no, I did (have nerves). I tried to just hit it out.

"I love playing here ... it brings out the very best in me," she added, with William saying she "hid it well".

During the exchange, Kate also asked Ash whether she was able to speak to her family the night before she stepped onto Centre Court.

"Yeah I called my niece and nephew and they were so excited. I know they’re up watching now," Ash replied.

William and Kate were among a host of famous faces in the crowd to watch Ash Barty's Wimbledon win.

Just a few rows behind the couple in the Royal Box sat actor Priyanka Chopra, who is known to be a friend of their sister-in-law, the Duchess of Sussex.

Opera singer Katherine Jenkins, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and previous winners Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King all watched the match from the Royal Box.

After the match a tweet from the royal couple’s official account, read: "What an incredible match and performance by both athletes! Congratulations @ashbarty on being crowned Wimbledon champion."

But it was Hollywood star Tom Cruise who appeared to spark the biggest reaction from tennis fans, with many even calling the actor out for 'stealing the spotlight' from Ash Barty.

The official Twitter account for the tennis championship shared a few videos in honour of Cruise's presence, including showing him waving at a cheering crowd, but they didn't sit well with everyone.

"I do get a bit fed up with these people getting applause for no other reason than being there. It should all be about the amazing tennis being played," one person said on Twitter.

"Seriously. Sit down. It’s about the 2 amazing players on the court. Crowd should be interested in them," another agreed.
