A make-up artist's guide to applying concealer on mature skin
From camouflaging dark circles to correcting hyperpigmentation, concealer is an essential part of any make-up routine, no matter your age. However, similarly to how we adapt our skincare regime as we get older (for example, introducing retinols and peptides to counteract crepiness and lost volume), the concealer formula you need will change vastly depending on age. While young adults and teenagers will search for high coverage to perfect blemishes and post-acne scarring, mature skin requires an entirely different approach with discrete textures and alternative tools.
Here, we consult the professional make-up artists Warren Dowdall and Claire Mulleady on the best concealer formulas for mature skin, how to apply them seamlessly, and the best methods of preventing creases in fine lines.
What is the best concealer for mature skin?
Experts are in agreement that lightweight, skin-like formulas are best when it comes to concealing mature skin types. Thicker consistencies will appear heavier on the skin, amplifying texture and emphasising dryness.
"For mature skin, a lightweight, creamy concealer is your best friend," says Dowall. "You want something hydrating that moves your skin rather than settling into fine lines. A serum-infused concealer works wonders because it provides coverage while keeping the under-eye area fresh and radiant."
How do you apply concealer for mature skin?
When it comes to concealing for mature skin, layering the right products is essential.
"For dark circles, starting with a peach or bisque-toned corrector to cancel out any darkness is key," says Mulleady. "If you see more blue or purple tones in your under eye, choose a bisque shade; if you see more brown or green tones, use a peach shade. Follow with a lightweight skin tone correct concealer on top, focusing most coverage on the inner corner and sheering as you move towards the outer corner of the eye so as to not exaggerate the appearance of fine lines. Tap it in with your fingertip for a seamless blend. Remember, less is always more."
How do you prevent concealer from creasing on mature skin?
Creasing is completely normal and happens to many of us, regardless of age. However, there are some expert tricks you can utilise to maximise the wear time of your product.
"The key to preventing creasing is hydration and thin, strategic application," says Dowall "Always prep your skin with a good moisturiser or primer, especially in areas prone to dryness. Use a lightweight concealer and build it up only where needed. When setting, opt for a finely milled, hydrating powder like Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Pressed Powder and apply it sparingly with a fluffy brush or sponge. A spritz of setting spray can also help lock everything in place while keeping the skin looking fresh."
