Arthritis? Women over 50 are using sneaky magnetic clasps to fasten necklaces
Attach one of these easy-to-use doodads to your favorite jewelry and fumble no more.
I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that one of life's greatest trials is connecting a necklace or bracelet clasp all by yourself. Yes, we've all done it, but it's a hellish task that has, all at once, made me cry, scream and abandon my outfit altogether. So, imagine my utter joy while scrolling through my bargain hunters Facebook group and finding the perfect solution: magnetic jewelry clasps.
One group member in her 50s who hates gatekeeping good products dropped a link to Hicarer Locking Magnetic Jewelry Clasps. She says these smart finds are easy on her arthritic hands, and she no longer worries about breaking a nail in the name of jewelry. They're only $9 for a pack of 12, and thousands of Amazon fans have given them their five-star approval. I have never smashed that "add to cart" button so fast in my life.
These magnetic clasps seamlessly blend into any chain. In the words of this five-star Amazon reviewer: "Why didn't I know about these before?"
The concept here is exactly as it sounds — instead of struggling to open and hook a classic clasp onto a chain, you just use magnets. Match them together to secure the chain and pull them apart when you want to take off your bling. They're not just super simple to use, but install. Each side has a corresponding lobster clasp that attaches to the original clasp on your necklace or bracelet. Just hook each piece on and voilà.
The clasps are simple and chic, so they won't take away from your jewelry. Each one has a diameter of 0.35 inches, and the total length is 1.38 inches. So not only does this replace pesky clasps, but you can also use it as a jewelry extender. Who doesn't love a two-in-one hack?
Amazon shoppers recommend these just as much as the woman in my Facebook group. I mean, just take a look at some of the over 3,700 five-star reviews:
"My gram is in her late 80s and had trouble getting one of her shorter necklaces off one evening, so she just slept in it," shared one buyer. "After I found that out, I found and purchased these. They have been really great for her and her independence."
"I have acrylic nails and needed an easier way to get my jewelry on and off by myself," explained a second five-star reviewer. "I've used magnetic clasps in the past but they weren't strong enough to trust. These, though, are strong enough for my heaviest necklaces so far! ... Easy to remove when you want. I'm going to be ordering many more."
"My left hand does not function well following multiple injuries and surgeries," wrote another reviewer. "It is difficult to pinch small objects between thumb and index finger. I received these magnet closures a few weeks ago and attached them to four choker-size chains. Some of the chains are a very fine gauge, but all of them function as described, and I am thrilled to be able to wear necklaces and easily get them on and off."
While this five-star reviewer loves that they're "easy to attach and the magnet holds well" they warn that the clasps do add extra length to necklaces, bracelets and anklets.
"My necklaces are the perfect length for me," said a four-star reviewer with the same gripe. "When I attach these to the necklace, it becomes longer, obviously, and now it's too long for me. Same for my bracelets. It will work if you have a short necklace and don't mind a little more length."
Other reviewers cautioned against getting these clasps wet. "Very secure. Easy to use," this customer wrote. "Don't shower with it on or get it wet as the gold/silver comes off the clasps."
For just a buck more, you can get this 12-pack that comes with rose gold clasps and a convenient case.
