So, how many of the top 10 most irritating buzzwords do you hear on a daily basis?

1. Give 110 per cent – to go above and beyond what is expected.

2. Blue sky thinking – be open minded and thinking outside of the box.

3. Low hanging fruit – get the easiest job you have out of the way first.

4. Synergise – collaborate with others to be more effective.

5. Outside of the box – use fresh ideas and thinking imaginatively.

6. Square the circle – achieve something that’s been deemed impossible.

7. Ecosystem – complex, interconnected network.

8. Atomise – to break down a problem into smaller units.

9. Bleeding edge – new technology or technique which comes with some risks.

10. A lot of moving parts – Many departments or components to manage at one time.

The survey was conducted at the IP EXPO trade show by Fuze in London, where more than a quarter of the 100 IT and business professionals voted ‘giving 110 per cent’ was the most infuriating buzzword used in offices.

Whilst buzzwords may be annoying, they also might be alienating employees and consumers.

“The use of clichés and buzzwords contradicts the move to replicate consumer-like experiences in the workplace and alienates both workers and customers,” Bradlee Allen, a product evangelist at Fuze, said.

“The new generation of workers value direct communications. Phrases like ‘Give 110 percent’ only cause confusion and create barriers between colleagues.”

According to Mr. Allen, companies need to “break away from jargon and move to more valuable conversations between workers”.
