Anna Delvey gets pep talk from Julia Fox, judges on “DWTS”: 'I didn't expect such backlash'

"It's sad to see all the people being so nasty because if it were their sister or their mother they'd be all for a second chance," Fox said.

After a rough first week on Dancing With the Stars, controversial contestant and convicted felon Anna Delvey received some advice from a surprise guest in week 2: Julia Fox.

During her intro package in Tuesday's Oscars-themed episode, the Uncut Gems star and model popped by Delvey's dance practice with pro partner Ezra Sosa. After Delvey lamented to her partner that she was "really happy" after her first performance, but then "went online and I was like reading all these comments and I just felt so upset," her friend, Fox, showed up.

"When you're young, you might do some things that you might be ashamed of later, but it all happened to you so publicly, so it's only right that we now get to see your moment," Fox told her.

To the camera, Fox added, "It's sad to see all the people being so nasty because if it were their sister or their mother they'd be all for a second chance. She's such a sweetie pie, so you're gonna win over America's hearts."

The actress also admitted that Delvey does put up "this tough exterior" but "it's obviously a defense mechanism."

Fox's appearance comes after Sosa took to social media on Monday to defend his partner, telling viewers in an Instagram video that Delvey was crying after the show last week. "We couldn’t find her," Sosa said. "We finally found her in the bathroom. She was crying. I'd never seen her like that and it broke my heart." As Delvey's partner, Sosa said, "I wanted to give her the best experience, and knowing that that’s not the case" was heartbreaking for him.

"I know what she did was really controversial and not right and I can never justify that for her or for anyone in her life," he added. But it's "hard," because "this person that I'm truly falling in love with every single day in rehearsal isn’t the person that everyone sees in the media." Imploring audiences to give Delvey "some grace," Sosa added, "No one deserves the amount of hate she’s getting right now. She deserves a second chance. She has stepped up to the plate."

On Tuesday, Delvey and Sosa danced the quickstep to “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall from two-time Oscar nominee The Devil Wears Prada, receiving scores of 6, 5, and 6 from the judges, who also had some advice for Delvey.

"Anna, listen, it is hard to deal with the haters," Carrie Ann Inaba told her. "It truly is. I can understand that. But what I want you to do is embrace this fully, like I feel like still you're holding back just a hair. And what I want to say to you is, listen to this part because this is the important part: You have beautiful lines, you have the potential to go far, if you just embrace it more. See that smile? You're part of the family, now. You're not alone out there."

During her post-dance interview, Delvey kept her remarks short and sweet. "I didn't expect such backlash, but it's a new week and I'm trying to get through it." And when asked what the hardest part of actually dancing was for her, Delvey made the audience laugh by admitting, "I think, like, jumping around."
