Ana Navarro gets emotional on air as Republican “View” star preps to host DNC night 2: 'Wish my mom was here to see it'
Navarro fought back tears as she celebrated hosting the second evening of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Ana Navarro moved herself to tears as the Republican View panelist reflected on putting country before party ahead of hosting night two of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
The 52-year-old talk show cohost and political commentator got emotional Tuesday morning on CNN — where she also serves as a regular contributor — as she discussed the significance of being a Republican helming the impending telecast for the Democratic party.
Navarro began the conversation with network personalities Sara Sidner and John Berman by addressing her political past as a Republican, and the act of breaking with her party amid the rise of Donald Trump.
"When Joe Biden was speaking [on night one] and he had that moment, 'I love my job, but I love my country more,' I think people need to heed those words. We need to love our country more," Navarro said, before criticizing Trump's treatment of specific groups like disabled people, Mexicans, and women. "How was that not the end?" she asked. "I broke with Donald Trump, I broke with the Republican party — the Trump party — way back then, and I haven't looked back."
Navarro expressed excitement to "help my girl Kamala [Harris] accept the nomination" during the DNC, because she hopes Americans will be able to see the optimism her campaign represents for the future.
"I'm beyond myself to have this role today," Navarro said, pausing to collect her thoughts as she fought back tears. "Because I'm a little refugee girl who fled communism in Nicaragua. I just wish my mom was here to see it."
Navarro has been a staunch critic of Trump and those who aligned with him across the last eight years, regularly slamming him from her post on The View. Navarro also firmly supported Biden earlier this year, even amid sustained calls — including from her View cohosts — for the president to bow out of the 2024 election cycle (which he eventually did) following his disastrous performance against Trump at a debate in June.

Elsewhere amid the DNC, Navarro's former View cohost Meghan McCain shared a few critical thoughts about the convention on X, while, in addition to Navarro, fellow stars Kerry Washington and Mindy Kaling were also announced to host nights one and three of the DNC, respectively.
In addition to hosting night two of the DNC, Navarro will return to The View for its new season when the ABC talk show returns on Sept. 3.
