Amy Robach says Shannen Doherty had 'such an impact' on her: 'I just always marveled at her bravery'

The news anchor and breast cancer survivor remembers the late actress in a new podcast episode.

Breast cancer survivor Amy Robach is remembering the late Shannen Doherty as someone who had a lasting impact on her.

The news anchor paid homage to the 90210 and Charmed star, who died July 13 at the age of 53 from breast cancer, in the latest episode of her joint podcast with T.J. Holmes, Amy and T.J. “Shannen Doherty, that one has been hard for me today," Robach said, recalling the first time she met Doherty for an interview segment in 2020 about her diagnosis.

“I got to do the sit down with her when she announced in 2019 that she had stage four metastatic breast cancer, and she had such an impact on me because we were diagnosed two years apart initially," she recalled. "And she was declared cancer free. I was declared cancer free. . . every cancer is different, but she and I connected and she knew she was in a fight for her life."

Robach said, "I just always marveled at her bravery. I loved her as Brenda Walsh on 90210. So I was so excited to get to actually meet her. That was the first time I got to meet her, but I was blown away by her and her vulnerability and her willingness to share her story to help other people get through really tough times."

Having witnessed Doherty's "bravery in fighting it" and "taking it very publicly, it helps so many people going through that same battle," Robach added. "It's a very sad day that she lost her battle.”

Robach also recalled the Charlie Brown cartoon that Doherty lived by, which the late star had quoted to her during their first meeting. "She referenced a Charlie Brown Snoopy cartoon that she looked at daily to just remind her; she knew her time was limited. All of our time is limited, but she was acutely aware of it. She said, 'Charlie Brown says to Snoopy, YOLO Snoopy, you only live once. And Snoopy said, you got it wrong, Charlie Brown. You only die once. We live every day.' And that was how she chose to live these last few years."

Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and went into remission in 2017. She announced in 2020, via an ABC News interview with Robach (above), that it had returned in the form of stage four breast cancer. Doherty revealed last year that it spread to her brain.

Robach learned that she had been diagnosed with stage two breast cancer after she underwent a mammogram on-air for a Good Morning America segment in 2013. She completed her final round of chemotherapy the following year and has been cancer-free since.
