It may have happened well over a year ago, but Ubergate is one scandal that’s here to continue haunting former Today host Karl Stefanovic.
Just as he made his big TV comeback this week on This Time Next Year, a fellow Australian television personality has amusingly brought up the controversy of March 2018, when an Uber driver leaked details of Karl and brother Peter Stefanovic’s explosive phone call in which they spoke unfavourably of Channel Nine colleagues.
ABC’s News Breakfast host Michael Rowland tweeted on Wednesday morning, making mention of Karl’s PR disaster when promoting the network’s new series, Diary of an Uber Driver.
“We're previewing the new @ABCTV series 'Diary of an Uber Driver' with @mrsamcotton. Love to hear your best or worst experience in an Uber or Taxi.@BreakfastNews (we've got yours already, @karlstefanovic, thanks anyway),” tweeted the 51-year-old television journalist and presenter.
Of course, it seems like the social media post was all in good fun, as Michael has previously expressed his admiration of Karl’s work on Channel Nine.
When Karl was suddenly dumped from Today at the end of last year, Michael shared a warm message to his TV rival on Twitter, reading, “Farewell from breakfast TV, @karlstefanovic. Always admired your work, particularly in the field. Enjoy the extra sleep”.
Gold Logie winner Karl was a Today staple for 14 years before Nine execs pulled the plug in December 2018 due to the star’s bad press.
The father-of-three’s personal life had spun out of control after his split with wife Cassandra Thorburn in 2016 - after 21 years of marriage.
Plus, there was Ubergate.
Last year New Idea magazine published an interview with an Uber driver, who claimed to have heard an explosive 45-minute conversation between Karl and his younger brother Peter, in which Karl said Georgie needed to 'step up' after taking over Lisa Wilkinson's hosting role.
As well as apparently accusing her of 'sitting on the fence', the Uber driver claimed an 'angry' Karl's criticism of his co-host involved him saying 'she didn't have enough opinions'.
After Karl’s dumping in late 2018, Deborah Knight was chosen to replace Karl as co-host on Today alongside Georgie Gardner.
