Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: Jacob & Co. Matai Tourbillon
Actor and professional wrestler, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson attended the world premiere of Moana 2 last week, wearing a custom-made, one-of-a-kind Jacob & Co. Matai Tourbillon. The watch’s dial draws direct inspiration from Johnson’s tribal-inspired tattoo, which pays homage to his Samoan roots and also serves as a link to his Moana 2 character, Maui. This 45 mm timepiece comes in black and gold, is powered by a one-minute flying tourbillon, and is fitted with a black alligator strap with a titanium and rose gold deployment buckle. Matai means “chief” or “leader” in the Samoan language, making it a fitting name for this bespoke piece and its new owner. It is valued at $215,000.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson: Omega Constellation Globemaster
British stage, television, and film actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson attended the London photocall for “Kraven The Hunter” this week wearing an Omega Constellation Globemaster. This 39mm rose gold and stainless steel timepiece features a “Pie Pan” dial that is reminiscent of models from the 1950s. The Constellation Globemaster was the first Omega collection to achieve Master Chronometer certification with the brand’s most advanced mechanical movement. Each watch is certified through a series of independent tests that guarantee a daily variation of 0 to +5 seconds and magnetic resistance to 15,000 Gauss (MRI machines are typically 10,000 Gauss). This timepiece comes with a price tag of around $14,500.
J. Balvin: Audemars Piguet x KAWS Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Companion
Colombian musician, J. Balvin is recognized as one of the most commercially successful Latin music artists globally, earning him the title of the “Prince of Reggaeton”. He was one of the first artists to receive the brand new Audemars Piguet x KAWS Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Companion that came out just last week. This limited edition is crafted from titanium and features KAWS’ iconic “Companion” character in the center of the dial with a tourbillon inside his chest at six o’clock. The watch uses a new peripheral time display system which is powered by a new hand-wound 60-second tourbillon movement – the Caliber 2979. Limited to only 250 pieces this timepiece retails for $200,000.
DJ Khaled: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked
Another celebrity spotted out and about wearing Audemars Piguet this week was DJ Khaled. The artist was a guest on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show and could be seen on set wearing one of his favorite Audemars Piguets, the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked. This 41 mm timepiece comes in a black ceramic case and features a semi-smoked sapphire crystal dial that indicates the day, date, month, leap year, and an astronomical moon phase. Rose gold hands and details on the dial add a striking contrast to the black ceramic. The watch is powered by the selfwinding Caliber 5135 that beats at 2.75 Hertz and has a power reserve of 40 hours. You can expect to pay around $145,000 for this timepiece.
John Mayer: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Supersonnerie
John Mayer was seen on Instagram this week interviewing Billy Joel for his “That’s Life” talk show on the popular entertainment platform SiriusXM. The watch lovers among us couldn’t fail to notice his 42 mm Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Supersonnerie in black ceramic. Its sleek lines, black “Grande Tapisserie” dial, and applied white gold indexes hide Audemars Piguet’s latest hand-wound minute repeater movement, the patented Caliber 2953. Despite ceramic’s limited sound conductivity, the Supersonnerie still emits a remarkable chime. It is completed with a black rubber strap. Price is available on request.
Carlos Sainz Jr: Richard Mille RM 67-02 Italy Edition
Coming in third across the finish line of the Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend, Spanish racing driver Carlos Sainz Jr. was seen celebrating with his Richard Mille RM 67-02. The Ferrari driver has quite a few Richard Mille’s in his collection but this one is particularly well suited to his racing overalls. Weighing a mere 32 grams, this is one of the lightest wristwatches on the market thanks to its combination of TPT composite materials, grade 5 titanium elements, and elastic wristband. It is powered by the skeletonized automatic-winding Caliber CRMA7, which has a 50-hour power reserve. The watch was created for and tested by athletes so that it would be resistant and almost unperceivable on the wrist, something that Sainz Jr. surely appreciates in his line of work. Price on request.
Georges Russell: IWC Ingenieur 40
Remianing on the racetrack of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, we also spotted the race’s winner, Georges Russell with his trophy wearing an IWC Ingenieur 40. This steel sports watch was inspired by the brand’s Ingenieur SL from the 1970s which was designed by the legendary designer Gérald Genta. This modern-day version takes the bold aesthetic codes of Genta’s design and adds improved ergonomics, finishing, and technology. The integration of the bracelet into the case and the round bezel fixed with five polygonal screws are particularly pleasing to the eye as is the “Aqua” dial featuring the brand’s grid structure. The watch is powered by a manufacture movement with an impressive 120-hour power reserve. Like the original, it comes with a soft-iron inner case, shielding the movement from magnetic fields. This watch comes at a price of $11,700.
