As a longtime craft editor at a slew of national magazines, I’m so sad to see that JOANN Fabric is closing its stores. Not only were their seasonal offerings, like Easter baskets and Halloween pumpkins, always tasteful, but they also stocked great craft supplies, and their sewing section was second to none. And for those living outside major cities, JOANN provided access to materials that are typically best seen in person before buying. Hobby Lobby and Michael’s, you have big shoes to fill!

The last day you can use a JOANN Fabric gift card is Friday, February 28, 2025, and locations across the country have already begun holding in-store going-out-of-business sales. Final closing dates will vary from store to store, so it's best to start filling your (virtual and in-person) carts now. Here are the six things I'll be stocking up on as prices are slashed and before JOANN Fabric closes for good, and I'll miss shopping there every day after.

1. Gutermann Sewing Thread

Known for its durability, I also truly love Gutermann sewing threads for their amazing color selection. Need a robin’s egg blue rather than just light blue or the perfect petal pink rather than a typical light pink? This brand will have what you need, and JOANN has always offered a wide range.

2. Drapery and Upholstery Fabric

I believe you'll want to touch and feel the fabrics you'll use in your home before buying. And if you don’t have the patience to wait for a sample to come in the mail or you’re not a designer and don’t have tons of money to spend, JOANN has always had a great selection of accessible fabric options for window treatments and furniture projects. I'll be browsing in-store for transparent linens to turn into cafe curtains and any and all blue-and-white fabrics, which always feel at home in country farmhouse decor.

3. Cottons for Quilting

If you are a quilter or like to make outfits for the grandkids, the cotton fabric selection at JOANN couldn't be beat. I always appreciated their wide selection of cotton solids and the many cute patterns from Keepsake Calico.

4. Quilting and Sewing Tools

Sewing mats, rotary cutters, blades, cutting rulers... I am clumping these all together since they are typically used in tandem. Not only do I use them for all sewing and quilting projects, but they are also a must for paper crafting, too. I like to have a large cutting mat, a rotary cutter, a hearty blade refill stash, and a selection of quilting rulers.

5. These Specific Scissors

Everyone in the office knows how I feel about my fabric scissors – don’t touch them! I kid. But in truth, when working with fabric or ribbon, it’s imperative to have a pair of really sharp scissors that have never touched paper or other material. I look for pairs that come apart completely so they can be sharpened. I love the Gingher 8-inch Fabric Scissors.

6. Mini M&M's

Whenever standing in line to check out at JOANN I always marveled at the amazing selection of candy. My go-to: mini M &M’s in the tube. I love the funny packaging and the chocolate-to-candy-shell ratio, which is higher on the chocolate. And something tells me I'm going to need that small treat more than ever as I mourn my last trip to this beloved fabric resource.
